And fuck Skyrim right now. I tried to play last night offline, and that's when my issues began. It would give me a message I've seen before saying steam can't connect. At which point I'd click "play offline" and it used to work. So last night I tried to play offline again, and it would give me the message, and then another connection issue message after I click "play offline" and then it'd restart the whole process.

Today, after reconnecting to my internet, Skyrim won't launch at all past the Autorun. It pisses me off that Bethesda would require Skyrim to be played through Steam. If I wanted a Steam game, I would have bought it off Steam's site instead of on a damn CDROM.

If anyone else is experiencing or has experienced this issue and knows a fix, please let me know. I am unreasonably upset right now, I just want to chill out and play the damn game before I have to work a fuXing 8 hour shift.

It's almost like the game isn't on my computer anymore:

Does this mean I have to re-install? If I lose my saved games, I'm going to rage.

I've read on the texus skyrim forums (Skyrim mod site)

That the recent Skyrim patch included that particular issue you are having.
(Not being able to play it without being online in steam)

Whether the forum poster was speaking the truth, I do not know.
But I'd believe it, seems like something steam would do.

You are launching the game through steam? (yes?)

yeah that's the only way you can launch it. However, I resolved the issue by reinstalling. Steam isn't so bad, the reinstall was fast and painless and it saved my Saved Games... so I half way forgive Steam, and have begun to forgive Bethesda for partnering with Steam.

Glad to hear, I'd be pretty pissed having to restart Skyrim lol.
Sometimes feels like a grind getting some of the skills up (Smithing >_>)

Wonder why I don't just edit the stats in via console, would save so much more time that way lol.

I love Steam, apart from the weekly disconnections that last for a few minutes, I don't really have a problem with it.

I like the weekend deals they do as well, saved a lot of money via Steam deals.

First of all, if the icon in the botton is gone, it might be that some of the files for the game you were trying to install is corrupt. Steam got a fix for that; just right click your game in the steam library, choose "options" and there should be some way to validate the files for the games there.

Now as of Steam, it seems like a problem on your side. I have no problem connecting or playing any of my games. Since you can't even play offline, it must be a bug on your end - Now, I got this problem at my school too. When I try connect to Steam it won't give me access; if I try to play offline, it still won't work. I figured this was due to my school blocked some kind of ports (or something like that), which caused the "connection refused" message. This also caused that I couldn't play WoW, LoL, Poker (or any of these online games at my school ;)). I think you should take a look at your internet settings (eventually re-install Steam) and port settings, as I think that's whats causing the problem. If not, then it might just be the Steam servers, but I honestly doubt it; they're almost never offline (and since you can't even login in in "offline" mode, it might be your problem) and even if they were, the whole Steam community would complain in the steam forums.

If none of this helped you, try use the Steam forums: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/
    Or the Steam Support: https://support.steampowered.com/

Hope you get your problem solved!

EDIT: Oh well, saw you got your problem solved, never mind all this then :p
