    The Sale of Stolen Goods

I have noticed that in the new RLT section, several people have been selling stolen items. I believe that in a way, this is similar to the rules stating that you cannot scam people from other websites or regular people in general (ie. Where you cannot scam Runescape pins off people in online chat rooms). I know this will be controversial to most, seeing as how a large percentage of sales there are of stolen goods.

It is completely dumb for someone to sell stolen goods on a cheating website, let alone buy one knowingly. This violates several laws for the seller and consumer.

    Petty theft:
Although it would only be a misdemeanor, this is till against U.S. Federal and State laws. Many stolen items, such as phones or other electronics, can be tracked easily as technology advances. You could be caught any where you steal it, whether it be at school, from a store, or from a friend. Even after it is sold to someone, shipping can be recorded and subpoenas can always be filed for computer records. This would show where it was sold to, to whom, and when. It could possibly even prove that other goods were stolen.

Punishments for any sort of theft crimes can be escalated if you have been convicted of related charges previously.

Example of the sale of stolen goods:
    Possession of stolen goods:
Computer records can always be checked by the police. It would be easy to tell if you knew that what you purchased was obtained legally or not by looking at forum posts or MSN conversations. If the person you bought from is caught, you can basically guarantee that you will be as well. Everything is traceable.

Even if you did not know the items you bought were stolen, you will still be forced to return them to the original owner, and there is a chance that you will not get your money back.

Sythe does not want the reputation of an underground sales market. This site was not built for that, mainly just for gamers who desired an extra push in their games. I'm unsure of this, but I believe that the website owner, Sythe, could be sued for allowing the sale of stolen goods on his website knowingly. None of us that care about this site want to lose it. I know that this rule is not perfect, but it can help prevent law suits from being filed. Anyone that disregards this new rule should be either forumbanned or just banned completely.

In conclusion, I believe that stolen good sales should be barred from the website, and a rule should be created stating so. Who here is ready for a search warrant?

i do agree with you and i know that knowingly buying stolen goods is a pretty serious offense. Remember that this is a runescape cheating website with alreadya handful of illiegal activity so it's not like stolen real life items is a huge shock for this website. In conclusion though i do feel that if the stolen goods sales got too out of hand it would put the site at risk and it's probably not worth that.

Who cares? It's not like anybody knows if its stolen or not when looking at Real Life Items forum, and the original poster wouldn't tell them if its stolen.

Blah Blah Blah, who cares, who will know? No body is going to go "I'm selling stolen items" ect ect. And the percentage of getting caught on the net selling stolen goods unless its a very valuble item ie: ( Famous shit ) it's very low.

    Pertaining to your post, Loveable:

If someone stole your Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, would you not want it back. Many people don't put up with theft of items worth over $100 - $150, and some file police reports. Opposite to common belief, police actually do investigate theft crimes. If they were to discover that Sythe users were selling hoards of stolen items, they would most likely take action somehow.

    @ Skater14 and Rum,
Even if the buyer doesn't know it's stolen, the item will still have to be returned if the police follow through.
    @ Cfrey
I really don't care if you steal things and sell them to your friends in real life, but selling them here is stupid, and who would are just asking for trouble.

I've seen people banned on Sythe for mentioning that they used to phish Runescape players 2 years ago and getting their dispute denied.

It's implicit that stolen items cannot be sold here.

However, it is difficult to prove what is stolen and what is not, and we have never banned users simply for looking suspicious. If you know for a fact that someone is selling stolen goods and have proof of it, submit a report through RaS.

Thank you very much for adding it into the section rules and establishing a precedent, Sin.

And as for I Eric I, this isn't about Runescape gold - it's about real life item trading.

I never knew Sythe allowed real-life trading? If so, link me to the section.

    EDIT:
Oh, I just realised my stupidity. It appears that they just added this thing. O' Gosh, I'm blind. :(

    1. That's not what this is about.
    2. Yes, you can, it has happened before.
    More than once.

I agree, but they already take action against openly admitting it's stolen, so it's basically already in effect.

Exactly my point. Thank you, TJ.

Sin has added a rule in the RLT section concerning selling stolen items, for those who haven't seen it.
