Should women serve in combat?

Ok, so in Global Issues, we were assigned to write a paper on our opinion of this article:

What are you personal views on this subject? Should women be allowed to serve in the United States (or wherever else) military as a combat unit? For those who don't know, women currently are NOT allowed in anything smaller than a brigade, and cannot server in any office that requires regular combat.

i have mixed emotions on this

what happens if the women severing get captured (pow) what would happen to them?

get killed? tortured ? raped? use for hostages ?


but it doesn't mean i don't support them join in the war, im just saying what could happen?

As far as I'm concerned if she's fit for the job she's fit for the job.

 

Ok now think of the factor of unit cohesion. Do you think having women will change how a unit works together? Do you think men will act differently with a woman in the squad?

I don't doubt that there are girls who are as strong, or even stronger than many men, but what about how they think? One important factor in a squad is that everyone needs to think alike, and it's absolutely true that on many things, women think in entirely different processes then men. Another factor is that everyone needs to execute. I think that women aren't as good with accepting morally gray situations or orders as men are. In a lot of instances, that's a great quality, but not when life and death is decided on how quickly you can accept and execute your orders.

 

Truthfully i was unaware that woman are not allowed on the front lines in battle in present day, is this the same in canada? Either way I think that yes, woman should be allowed to be front-line fighters. A woman with the same quality training and same (or close) physical attributes can be just as effective in fighting as a man. So if it is their choice to fight and they meet the criteria, all the power to them

 

I say no because men + women at war, in the middle of nowere ( most of the time ) = Sexual Assault issues and raping.

 

I see where you are coming from, but to be honest i disagree. Yes, woman do think differently then men in many cases, but a woman who has joined the military and requested this position is most likely going to be in the right mind-set for the job, thus doing it just as well as a man. Assuming she couldn't do that, it would show in trainging. If it was obvious in training she was having the problems you outlined then she would be removed from the squad. Bottom line is you don't really know how it will effect this situation until tried.

Why not, im pretty sure some women would probably do a better job then SOME men.

but women on ze period on the field = nothanks i wouldn't say being emotionally unstable would go down well

If the pass all the same tests men do, I say let them go for it.

They shouldn't be treated any differently.

 

I do believe that women should join the army(any position) if they choose. They want to serve their country the same as men do. Though I do still think that drafts should be men only.

 

I think if they have the bravery and courage to serve their country and defend it then they have the right to chose whether or not they want to serve in combat or not

 

I want to know what you guys think about how it affects unit cohesion. Why or why wouldn't having women in combat change how the conflict plays out? How do you think it would affect team cooperation etc.?

 

Its an atrocity to not let them if they are both willing and capable. They know damn well what they are getting into and shouldn't be held back just because they are a different sex.

 

Women would be a distraction to guys and most likely a hinderence.
