how to deny a job offer?

Well, a few weeks ago I was scared I'd never get a job. Well, I went to an interview at Dunkin donuts, and the guy said "You'll get a call monday if you got the position, if you don't get the call, then you didn't get it." So I assumed, I didn't get it, because it's been 2 weeks. So I applied at a local place, and they called me into an interview, I accepted, and they said they'd call me today to set up start up dates or something. They were so friendly to me, and I spent a little time in there, and I have this thing where I have a very hard time denying people. Anyways, the DD's guy called today, and offered me a job. I ruled out the cons and pros of each place, and announced that the DD's job was the safest bet (more positions, more locations, etc.)

Anyways, now I have to deny the guy at the local restaurant, I know he won't have trouble finding employees, but he was so kind, and I pretty much told him I'd take the position. When he calls (in like 30 minutes) what's a good way to deny the offer in a nice way, or tell him I can't work there. I really don't even care if it's a lie, as long as it's a good lie, but, I'd prefer to not lie.

Plain and simple, tell him you gave out your resume to more than one location and another place that accepted you was easier for you to get to. The shorter commute was what made you pick that job over the restaurant's.

I wouldn't bother lying; that just makes you feel worse when you talk to the person.

Lying makes it hard to tell someone because you need to make stuff up on the spot.

Just tell the person that there was a better opening some where else that was better for you commute.

Guessing you already told the local restaurant guy since it's been over 30min. But if you haven't, then do what Tiger said, it's your best bet.

It's obviously too late to help, but for future situations, simply tell the truth: straight up.

"I handed out my resume to a number of other businesses, and I was accepted by 'x' company earlier."

If they're professional about it, they won't have any problem accepting your reasoning.

Yup, what tiger said. There's no wrong telling the truth really.
