Mass Discord Ban Wave Targets Illicit OSRS Services

Jagex’s crackdown on Real World Trading (RWT) reflects a strategic shift toward targeting the financial incentives driving RWT, which directly threaten the game’s integrity and Jagex’s revenue model. While botting remains an ongoing issue, RWT poses a more immediate challenge by competing with Jagex’s official offerings, such as OSRS Bonds that can be redeemed for gold or membership. By eliminating RWT, Jagex ensures that players purchase currency and services directly from them, safeguarding their revenue streams.

One of the most effective aspects of this approach is that targeting RWT networks also disrupts the botting ecosystem, which relies on real-world profit to sustain operations. Many bots farm gold and services to sell on black markets, and removing the financial incentive makes these operations far less viable. This two-pronged strategy not only limits RWT but also shrinks the botting ecosystem, achieving both goals at once.

Rather than attempting to shut down websites like Sythe, Jagex focuses on disrupting Discord-based vendors directly, hitting these operations where it hurts the most. By banning accounts, back-up servers, and networks in coordinated waves, Jagex forces vendors to rebuild months or even years’ worth of reputation, member lists, and infrastructure, only for it to be wiped out again in an instant. This chain-banning strategy makes it increasingly difficult for RWT providers to recover, discouraging further operations and undermining their long-term profitability.

Jagex’s new enforcement system reflects a much stricter approach, with many reports indicating that players—whether vendors or buyers—are now receiving unappealable permanent bans without prior warnings for RWT-related activities. Previously, Jagex would often issue warnings for minor violations related to RWT before escalating to permanent bans if the behavior continued. Additionally, players caught for major botting offenses often had the opportunity to appeal their bans after a few years, with some appeals being approved after enough time had passed. However, this process has changed. Now, even high-level players with maxed accounts, Zuk helms, or legitimate membership purchases are not exempt from these harsh penalties if found engaging in RWT or botting.

There is no official confirmation that Jagex worked directly with Discord to coordinate the recent ban wave, but reports suggest that many OSRS-related services were targeted. The crackdown focuses on disrupting RWT activities, with vendors on third-party platforms like Discord being affected. While it aligns with Jagex’s strategy to maintain game integrity by targeting RWT networks and backup operations, it’s plausible that Discord’s Trust & Safety team supported the effort through its investigative processes. Even if the specifics of cooperation remain unconfirmed, Jagex’s actions reflect a broader attempt to deter RWT activities.

Jagex has a history of working with legal systems to protect its intellectual property and combat private servers and black-market activities. In the past, Jagex has issued cease-and-desist letters and pursued legal action to shut down private servers and websites engaged in unauthorized activities. It is also reported that the company has coordinated with third-party platforms to ensure enforcement, suggesting that recent efforts involving Discord bans could follow a similar pattern of collaboration.

How Vendors Might Respond to the Crackdown:

Vendors affected by these bans are likely to adapt quickly. They may migrate their operations to encrypted platforms like Telegram, WhatsApp, or Signal, or spread across multiple smaller Discord servers to avoid detection. Rebranding under new names, rotating identities, and automating backups will help them recover quickly after bans. Some may also diversify their operations across platforms like and private forums to make enforcement more difficult. Others might shift their marketing to appear legitimate—disguising RWT transactions as coaching, consulting, or giveaways—and capitalize on player frustration, encouraging distrust toward Jagex’s enforcement efforts. These adaptive strategies ensure the cat-and-mouse dynamic between vendors and Jagex continues, even as enforcement becomes more aggressive.

This holistic approach by Jagex underscores a long-term strategy aimed at cutting off the lifeline of RWT networks. Whether through direct bans, legal enforcement, or collaboration with platforms like Discord, Jagex is sending a clear message: attempts to profit from the game outside official channels will not be tolerated. However, as vendors adapt and find new ways to circumvent these measures, the struggle to safeguard RuneScape’s economy will likely continue to evolve.

From where? I’m trying to find other information regarding this. Please send me it. I’m trying to be as informed as possible. I haven’t been able to find anything regarding mass ban waves across discord regarding other services besides OSRS.

This ban wave could have taken a lot of time and planning. You’ve advertised OSRS-related services like RWT and boosting before, so evidence might’ve been building up over time. Plus, if anything was reported before being deleted, Discord can keep snapshots for later use. Do you know of anyone else who got banned without ever advertising OSRS-related services and still got caught up in this? I’m just trying to accumulate as much evidence and information as possible. I know discord bans happen all the time, but a targeted wave ban against OSRS services seems a little suspicious as I’ve never seen this before.

"You’ve advertised OSRS-related services like RWT and boosting before"
False, never had any of that posted on Discord at all.

"but a targeted wave ban against OSRS services"
I'm fairly certain it wasn't a specific OSRS "targeted" ban wave. Typically there are two types of Discord Server bans. I'd call one set "automatic" bans (what happened this time) and I'd call the other "manual" bans. The automatic bans typically happen when a server gets reported enough by users. They roll these bans out in mass typically once a month (at least from my past experiences.) For manual bans, the only noticeable difference is that anyone with admin permissions will also receive an account ban. Auto server bans will typically only ban the server owner. I've also experienced cases with other completely unrelated servers where they not only ban people with admin permissions but also users with some "extra" permissions like "Mods" & "Ticket Staff." Also with manual bans, all the users in the server will get an email/discord system message like this one.

I literally was responding to someone who claimed you never advertised OSRS services. So, I did a thorough search and found a TTG thread where you openly advertised OSRS RWT and other multiple OSRS miscellaneous services, all linking directly to your Discord that got banned. After I posted a direct link to that TTG thread, you conveniently went and updated/deleted everything from the thread. It’s not even an old thread since it was actively promoting TOA PVM services too.

If you’ve got nothing to hide or if what I’m saying is “false”, why scramble to change and delete the info on that thread about OSRS services right after I exposed it? That just proves my original point: you did, in fact, advertise OSRS related services linked to your banned Discord. What’s your argument now? That you didn’t post any of it in your Discord? You can’t say you didn’t post any of it in your discord at any point in time related to OSRS services when you’re actively trying to cover up what I found. You also posted vouches in your discord and admitted to it, please tap the link below to see proof.

    imgur.com

As I also stated, while it’s not a confirmed fact, based on all available evidence, it seems to be true that this was a targeted strike against OSRS related services. Until I see proof that services unrelated to OSRS were also taken down, the situation remains clear: major Sythe users OSRS services were banned and taken down simultaneously. I also stated there is no official confirmation that Jagex worked directly with Discord to enforce these bans, but the coordinated nature of the action strongly suggests a focused effort against the OSRS service community. Tell me when there was a nuke attack on almost ALL services like this before.

Discords and Discord servers being banned have nothing to do with Jagex. Trust me, Jagex or their IP Coordinators (Ukie for example) are not going to send a list with Discords and/or servers they want removed to Discord itself. Game "cheats" are against Discords own TOS hence the bans.

I do agree with Jagex their IP Coordinators going after channels that hurt vendors the most. Examples such as Meta pages, Google ads accounts, Youtube accounts, websites (domain and server hosting), etc etc

Lots of servers were shut down that day that weren't related to Runescape.
So I agree, it was probably just on Discords end.
It does seem Sythe was used though as every server that was banned was also bumping on Sythe.
There were some larger servers that don't bump that didn't get hit.

I don't believe Sythe is a cause at all. I have friends who are in the Fin exchange industry that never even heard of Sythe that also got their servers (and a lot of them their actual Discords) banned. Just a basic Discord clean up, that's it.

It's odd though that the servers that were hit in the OSRS community were all on Sythe, and the larger ones that didn't get hit were not bumping.
Perhaps they used Sythe + some other forum as sources to find these servers?
The OSRS servers here were getting hit all in a row, roughly 10-20 mins between them usually.

I do agree with much of what you said. However, I’d also like to emphasize that while not typical, it is still possible for Jagex to work with Discord in reporting specific servers or accounts. Jagex could take this step if certain activities, like RWT or game cheating, are severe enough to warrant it.

This possibility can start to seem more plausible given the unprecedented mass ban against OSRS services, which I haven’t seen on this scale before personally. If any collaboration did happen, it wouldn’t be publicly disclosed either. I know you said they’re driven mostly by discord which is true, but there has still been proof of discord collaborating with game devs before, and not just independently.

Discord’s History of Collaborating with Game Developers:

-Ubisoft and Rainbow Six Siege (2019)

    -Riot Games and Valorant (2020)

(I’ve found direct links to this information, but unfortunately, they led to 404 Errors, even when checked on the Wayback Machine. However, that doesn’t change the fact that Discord has collaborated with game developers in the past to combat cheating and illicit activities.)

Those examples above show that while Discord typically enforces its policies independently, there is still proof/history of collaboration with game developers when the activities significantly impact the game’s community. It’s also possible that more instances of collaboration have occurred, but have been kept quiet for strategic reasons.
