    Long Range Rifles

Should long range rifles be legally available to the public, or be restricted to Military uses only?

By long range i mean 1000< yards.

Are these a threat to national security, or the foundation of the second amendment?

    I'll just say sniper rifles.

Why would a member of the public need a sniper rifle?

Wasn't the second amendment made where no such rifles existed?
It would most certainly be a threat to national security, imagine if a member of the public was able to snipe Obama in the head from over almost a mile away.

I don't think they're called a sniper rifle unless in the hands of a military trained sniper. These would sure be good for hunting!

An 1000< range rifle to hunt? That would take the sport right out of it.

I am a member of the NRA and an avid hunter, but I believe rifles like that should be restricted to military only.

Well, I'm a very active shooter. I shoot targets beyond 1500 yards, which is over 3/4 mile. I have shot deer at 1000 yards, and extreme range hunting is very fun, aswell as varmint hunting. These rifles are as much used for sport, in tactical competitions, as they are used in the field against long distanced animals.

Are you suggesting they be legalized like a pistol, or a special gun license be required for hunters to use them?
I see no other use viable use for them other than for hunting, or sniping off someones head.

I was just inquiring on others opinions, as to whether or not these guns should be outlawed.

Only without license as they have their place in hunting / other sports.

I'd rather have it for the military or for people that work with the guns.

    Long Range Rifles

My personal take on the situation, is that these guns should be freely available. I stated rifles that shoot beyond 1000 yards, which to the populace is only sniper rifles. This shows a common misconception blamed on the rifle, along with all of the propaganda recently that is calling for the direct banning of these rifles. The shooter, in reality, is the problem. I can hit a 1000 yard target with a Remington from walmart, on a human sized target, in the center of the chest, 10 out of 10 times. Do we ban all common hunting rifles? No. People just assume it's the victim of a high powered rifle.

Fact of the matter, the rifles should not be banned, limited, or licensed, because a trained marksman can use even a cheap, smaller caliber weapon to still hit targets farther than half a mile away if trained correctly.

P.S. Yes, this thread was to prove a point.

License should require a background, and some form of mental stability check.

I think they should be, It can be useful in hunting or just recreational shooting. It is less likely for someone to choose a sniper rifle to shoot someone opposed to a pistol. Too much margin for error so if people want to shoot each other or at someone with a sniper. They will do it with pistols.

I think they should be illegal. If I had any guns, I wouldn't register them because if the guvment tries to outlaw them, they won't know I have any. And if people try to take over the country I'll have a way to defend myself. Say yes to illegal firearms!

First I'd just like to respond to you: That is an awful idea in my opinion. Think about that. If anyone could just go out and a get gun, the US/World would be a mess. Let's say this "anyone" has some psychological problems and has a lot of domestic crimes in his/her past. What's gonna happen there? Someone's going to end up dead... and they probably didn't deserve it.

Second, they should be available to the public WITH a permit/license. It should be hard to get, and easy to lose. I myself own quite a lot of guns, all legally, and I hate people who are stupid and think they are a toy. I'm all for "go against the man sometimes in your life" but why would you want an idiot with a long range rifle or sniper rifle sitting across the way aiming toward a bird that JUST HAPPENS to be sitting on a tree by your house.

This is just my opinion, yours can differ.

I respect your opinion and understand completely why you feel this way. People that want guns can usually get them anyway. I own two guns legally, but I don't think people should have the right to confiscate them without proper cause, not just because some fat politician somewhere says they should be illegal. I do not think they are a toy, and have a lot of respect for the weapons I do own, seeing as I have sat through numerous hours of "courses" before you are allowed to use a range, not to mention what was required for my license.

You bring up a good point with idiots sniping birds. I would not feel comfortable with everyone owning guns. I suppose you could say my previous statement is flawed in that aspect. I should have specified that PERSONALLY, I want some "illegal", non-registered firearms so that I do not have to worry about having them confiscated should the law change. I do not want to be left without protection with such an uncertain future for the world, but I also do not want your everyday gang banger running around with a .50 cal.

I'd like some to protect myself, but I would like them to remain out of the hands of the general public, even though I know that includes me.
