Opinions on built in voice chat?

They announced that at some point there will be a voice chat feature added into game. If you play league what's your opinion?

I don't like it. I voice chat with premades only that I know won't be toxic. If it's text you can just mute someone and carry on communicating but if it's voice comms you're going to end up talking over each other and it'll be a mess. Not to mention the problem of 5 different languages trying to communicate and you can't understand jack shit because of strong accents.

 

I don't see how dealing with someone who is being verbally toxic would be any different or more complicated than dealing with someone who is being toxic in chat. Muting someone is muting someone; you don't see their chat now after muting them and I'd imagine you wouldn't hear them anymore if you muted them after voice chat was implemented.

On the other hand, I think the lack of built-in voice communication is a pretty big hindrance. I literally don't have time to stop and type to my team during the most intense phases of the game (e.g. team fights). Having voice chat would allow me or another teammate to relay information at any time, even during a fight.

 

The fact that in text multiple people can speak at the same time with no issues. In voice comms with people using mute functions it won't work so smoothly, and the fact you can still can still understand conversations anyway by only listening to one side of it.

It's meh, but I've never really used it much and when I do it's on my phone rather than my pc, so it won't impact me much.

 

I partially agree with both. Obviously there is going to be toxic people no matter what but like he said muting them is muting everything about them.

Being able to communicate as 5 (assuming that some would) would be extremely useful if people listened. Such as saying to play back as you're splitting. People are more likely to be aware that their teammates aren't there to back them up if they say so as a lot of lower players have horrible map awareness.

I don't play League anymore aside from a few ARAMs a month with friends. When I was big into ranked, the highest I was able to get solo was Gold 1. After a while, I didn't care much for solo/duo ranked primarily because of the issues that stem from the lack of in-game comms. Often times I would be put with a group of 4 people who were in their own third-party VOIP program and they did not communicate with me at all aside from flaming me for not being psychic and knowing the plays they were about to make. When I would duo with a friend, we ran into the same issue; he and I would be in our comms (teamspeak) and the group of 3 that we had on our team would be in theirs and no communication would be had throughout the game.

The thing is, if people are honest with themselves, nobody is actually against the implementation of in-game comms, including Riot. Pro teams are provided with voice comms during their matches and I don't think that anyone would argue that those teams should be forced to communicate via typing/text (like everyone on ladder is) while playing a match. Why? Because it would make zero sense. So, if we all agree that VOICE communication is essential for competitive play, why not just make it part of the game rather than forcing people to find a third-party alternative?

Built in voice communication would probably make me come back to the game. Until then, I will stick with the many other competitive games that already have such features (Dota 2, CS:GO, etc.).

 

Agreed with the majority of this. Riot was hinting at the idea of the option to play solo with only solo players on your team. Maybe this could resolve part of the issue. Or another implementation of you given a badge saying how your last 25 wins were won, either by a group, or solo. This second method doesn't really seem to be solving anything other than boosting a persons ego but at least we will know who climbed on their own and who was potentially carried by a group of people. Either way voice comms would more likely be used if put into the game rather than others using 3rd part software.

 

Im against it tbh. Too many people talking at the same time, would probably cause a little unnecessary chaos that could be easily avoided by not having voice chat in the first place.

 

I'm gold 4 on EUW but I stopped playing ranked when I hit gold 5 because I've had to play with an awful internet connection for a long time now. I'm able to win lane & snowball a game pretty heavily when I'm not lagging so I'd say I could reach somewhere in low plat atm.

 

I think a happy middle ground would be to first implement it into ranked mode and see how it goes. I still don't feel like the opposition has a very logical argument though; muting an obnoxious/toxic player requires minuscule effort and if you're someone who gets offended easily or whatever, you already have to mute them to not see their chat any more.

I could see how that would be a turn off to you if you're not someone who plays ranked. If you've ever heard a pro teams comms during a match, they indeed sound a bit chaotic. However, if you play ranked or play the game a lot in general, you're probably able to follow the 'chaos' and understand what's being called/said. Obviously the higher up the ladder you go, the more intense the competition becomes, so I'd argue that voice comms at lower ranks would probably not be very chaotic.

The fact is, though, that implementing in-game comms solves many issues while not causing any that aren't solved by features that already exist in the game. Someone being loud/obnoxious/chaotic? Do the same thing you already have to do for toxic players in chat -- mute them.

 

True. Too many people talking can be a bit hectic. Although if you have played in a pre-made 5 before, they tend to not be horrible. We usually get along well with the occasional toxic person. (Assuming you're playing with random new people)

Ah I gotcha. Was curious if people are bronze noobs who complain about everything and don't think they can ever win because of teammates.

That's also a good way to look at it. Thinking of pro players who know each others play style so well yet still are quite chaotic. Although there's a lot of noise going on, it's not that they are yelling at each other in anger, but rather in call outs.

 

It's disgusting that in 2016 we still dont have it. It's been promised numerous times now.

 

Yeah, almost every game out there, pretty much all have it as this point in tine.

 

Not posting my rank because it's embarrassing. But I'm actually glad this is coming to league, talked to @Shin couple days back how I would love if league had this. I'm not very good at typing and playing simultaneously, hopefully this will help my overall game experience.

 

All good lol. And yeah like I said earlier I think that voice chat will help lower elo players climb faster because they don't have to focus on as many things.

 

The whole toxic situation is bullshit, they could easily add a mute feature. Why is shit talking via voice deemed any worse than via text is beyond me

 

Going to comment on 2 things I saw in this thread

Yeah, they already do. Mute them and carry on, and on top of that - I find it a lot different to be toxic in real life than over text. Every time I link discord in pregame lobby, and not once have I had somebody rage at me. It takes bigger balls to shit talk over voice communications than it does over text and very few people have balls that big

OK, then don't use it if it's going to be annoying for you. Just because it's implemented doesn't mean everybody will be forced to use it. If you don't want to, then just mute in-game communication. I highly doubt they'll FORCE you to use it. It'll be there for those who want to use it.

I'm clearly all for an implementation of in-game voice communication

 

Honestly, a lot of the kids that play league are fuckboys that wouldn't talk to your face the way they type BM. Now this isn't saying that someone won't just go off on you (we all have played CoD before lmao), but I think the overall community would be a bit friendlier if you can just speak to people rather than type to them.

I've played quite a few solo-Q games where either I or a teammate convinced everyone to hop into Discord or Curse Voice and they've always been great. Even when everyone collectively gets shit on in lane, we can speak our ideas and still teamfight and coordinate well shouting things out to eachother that would have been too difficult to type or ping.

Same here. Every time we get on dc / cv it ends up well even if we lose with a few exceptions. We lose, we say gg and leave or try again. We win, we either say gg and elave or party up again. Same thing.
Only thing I considered is that Riot will have to actually listen to voice recordings when people are getting reported which may take more time on their part.

 

Those of you complaining that you don't like the idea due to the fact that "people would be talking over each other" clearly have little to no experience using voice comms in any type of competitive or semi competitive game.

Granted, there will be the occasional overstep in voice comms, so long as the team members are all able to even remotely work together, overstepping is generally very infrequent.

This would be no different to CS:GO, Dota, etc - which already have in-game comms. Excessive overstep only occurs when there's (a) toxic player(s) on the team, and the simple remedy for that is a mute.

I have not touched league in years due to me completely losing all interest in the game, but the fact remains that any game that has a team-based competitive aspect behind it NEEDS built in voice for matches that are not pre-made in order to properly allow for team communication, coordination, and execution.
