League of Legends Noob General Questions!

Hey all! I am currently a World of Warcraft player looking to move on and play a new game.

League of Legends caught my eye immediately and it looks extremely interesting. I've played a game similar to this called HoN (Heroes of Newerth), however this game looks extremely more complex and seems a lot more popular for some reason. Basically as a new player, I'm just looking for general info on the game.

I like competitive matchmaking. Does LoL offer a competitive ranking system? I remember someone mentioning something called Elo. What is this?

My other question is in terms of paying to play. I know League of Legends is free but they only give you 5 or so heroes to play for free is that correct? What do you recommend I do to enhance my gameplay and have more variety? What exactly do I spend my money on? How do I unlock more heroes?

Anything else you guys have to add I'd greatly appreciate. I really hope to be playing soon!

 

LoL is far superior to HoN. It takes more skill, and it's far more diverse, and ofc F2P.

It's a MOBA based game, and is currently the worlds #1 played/most popular/most users active game.

Oh and yes, It has a competitive scene, the biggest in the world infact. LoL E-Sports have the highest prize pool/competiting teams compared to any other E-sports in history.

Servers are NA/EU/EUW/KR/CHINA/TW/BR and a few more.

 

For your champions (heroes) question, your best guess is to buy bundles if you decide to get Riot Points ($$$) . They provide you a variety of champions to use like you suggested.

 

you unlock more heroes by getting IP ( points ) you get IP every game you play. You never have to spend ANY real money.... your first few games of LOL might not seem to great, but i would say after 5 games you will love the game and never want to quit. the 5 heroes they give you to start out with are fine to learn
