    New NFL Rule: Devastating Hits

Well after all of the action on Sunday, I guess the NFL is going to be implementing a new rule immediately. They are going to be suspending and fining players for "devastating hits".
    http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory?id=11917810

I think it's ridiculous. The NFL just wants to save money, they think that players getting knocked out and having concussions and being out for a week or two is costing them too much money. But if you cant go for big hits up top, where else can you go? Right, down low. Straight for the knees, resulting in a blown out knee, and being out for the season or even their career. They are taking the football out of football.

Do you think NFL is looking out for its business more or the game?

inb4 NFL is for pussies, we don't wear protective gear in my country.

It's one of my favorite things to do as a defensive back in all honesty. When the balls in the air, and the receiver is completely unaware. Then you lower your shoulder and just decleat him.

Stupid to see the NFL make it against the rules.

Yeah, but all the players who got jacked up on sunday had concussions and if you havent noticed there have been alot of them so far this season. Its a good rule, they already protect the quartback to much with bs roughing the passer calls but this is necessary.

"Devastating hits" These have all been helmet to helmet hits thats why. If a man is hit properly and tackled nicely right at the chest and is knocked out, then it should be fine. When you have dumbass players that lower their head fully aware of what it is to come their should be a suspension and fine. Just because it's a sport where contact is allowed doesn't mean your egotistical ass is allowed to do illegal hits. For one helmet hits are pussy hits.

Smartest damn thing they've done in along time. No need for this leading with your helmet bullshit anyways.

Only thing that does is ruin careers and shorten life spans.

It's a good rule. There are(and still will be) shitloads of big hits. Most helmet to helmet hits injure both players.

You guys aren't getting the concept. It isn't just "helmet-to-helmet" hits. It is ALL hard hits. I can't find the video at the moment, but on Sunday one player hit another in the chest, and the impact caused his helmet to raise up and laid the guy out. The replay has been on ESPN all night.

And this is making it totally unfair for the defensive players. How are you supposed to stop a back who comes up the middle and puts his head down on you?

Well, their going to have trouble with that. Their not going to be able to stop that. A good hit is a good hit, simple as that. As much as you'd like to have it when you played with your friends and went lightly on each other it's not going to happen in the NFL.

Well, if i was a coach i'd be concerned. If you're paying a star player millions, you don't want to see him get injured from something stupid. So you're going to push for a suspension/fine. But i still don't get how they'll get rid of K.O. Hits, it's inevitable. The appeals would be too easy to get away with.

But the way I look at it is; If a running back is coming at you full speed, and then puts his head down at you, the only thing you can do is go for his legs. Going for his legs can result in a SERIOUS/FATAL neck injury for yourself, and/or a blown out knee for the back.

Concussion - Out for 1-2 weeks.
    Wrecked knee - Career

"A day after an unusual series of player head injuries shocked football fans and alarmed the sport's officials, the National Football League vowed Monday to crack down on dangerous, illegal hits with more severe disciplinary measures. " the hit your reffering to im sure was one of the 5 or whatever they showed, and probably resulted in a concussion and its not all hard hits... that would be ridiculious its dangerous and illegal hits. And its easy to stop a back who comes up the middle whith his head down.. just dont lead with your helment.

How can you do it without putting yourself, or him in danger? And still be legal.

Personally I think this is redic, because A. Dunta Robinson didn't intend to go helmet to helmet, he knocked himself out, no one in their right mind does that. Another thing is this is football you tackle with ur shoulder into em.

They are fining and suspending for "Dangerous and Flagrant" hits. I think the league is totally right to do this, because most of these hits could be avoided and the defensive player is just going for these hits to injure the offensive player. Helmet to Helmet hits, shots to the knees, and many other "Dirty hits" should be banned as it risks the players career for no reason, when a clean tackle could be made just as easily. These players go out of their way to hit like that and it should be stopped before someone sustains a much worse injury. However, Dunta Robinson's hit on Desean Jackson was perfectly legal, he lead with his right shoulder and hit Jackson hard in the chest, while Jackson was turned and facing him. Robinson is appealing though and he should win considering he really didn't go for a cheap shot, it was just a good hit. That was a scary moment though, I thought Jackson died for a second he got hit so hard, he laid their motionless for a while.

Hitting hard is part of the NFL though. Fans love it. You gain the reputation by getting big hits. Don't get me wrong, I agree 100% with the helmet-to-helmet hits. But when a receiver is coming across the field, and opens up to catch a ball, he should know that a big hit is coming, that is just part of the game. Just like when a running back puts his head down and hits the middle, he should expect a big hit to be coming.

As long as its a legal hit against the receiver going across the middle (Like Robinson's hit on Jackson) then thats totally fine.

Agreed, it's one of the most exciting plays in football, especially when you're playing at a place like Clemson, LSU, or Michigan. Home of some of the loudest and craziest fans.
