As the title says I am looking at learning how to program but I am lost at which language to start with?

I'm more interested in making applications and interactive websites if that helps?

Thanks

If I'm sure I believe that it would be Java/JavaScript (don't know for sure) for interactive website. Also it depends on what kind of applications you are planning on making like android which is Java, Iphone which is Objective-C or normal applications for computers which is basically any programming Language.

Hope this help.

I would say go with Python. It's one of the best trade-offs between being easy to learn and use as well as being quite powerful and useful in a wide variety of applications.

The official tutorial isn't bad but I find they tend to assume too much prior programming experience. My favorite recommendations for absolute beginners are these two free online books.

If you end up liking it and learning enough to find your way around then you can move onto web development (probably making use of one of the popular frameworks).

Sorry Nullware a quick question regarding Python, is it versatile and widely used? and do you have any examples of Python in use?

Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions just trying to get as much info as I can :)

I've asked the same question on hackforums and the consensus over there seems to be either python or C++ to start with but I'm struggling to separate the two in terms of functionality. Does anyone have any examples of both python and C++ in use?

I can tell you examples of what C++ is use in. C++ can be use in Computer applications, music players, video games & many more. Just use Google because it can basically tell you anything you need to know.

C++ is MUCH harder to start off with.

You can do ALMOST all the same things with either one. Python just lets you build in less time while C++ lets you build something that will actually perform better and run faster (if you really need that).

Some popular ones you might use... GMail, Google Maps, Dropbox.
