Try Muay Thai or Kyokushin, two best martial arts.

Basic MMA for punches, kicks and stance.

Judo for ground work. Incase he grapples you like a homo, Choke him / Throw him / Lock him, so on.

Every style teaches you a method of self-defense but jujitsu will come in handy the most imo

Start small, i would practice Boxing, then you are going to have to mix it up a little maybe some kickboxing no point just using your arms when you have legs, knees & shins, judo is a great defense grapple martial art.

Join classes and start small don't over do it, remember it takes year's to master the arts, all martial arts combined together will make you feel like you can defend yourself and give you much more confidence.

*Just remember the last thing you want to do is have to use it*
    *Walk away if you can*

I think its funny how people are recommending alot of fancy martial arts like systema...

In the marines we where taught a few simple techniques then we drilled them constatly until we could do them with our eyes shut and been on a good night out.

All you need to know is -
    1. how to punch correctly without damaging yourself
    2. the push kick, used to get someone out of your area of personal space (pretty simple just a stern kick to the kneecap or chest will do it)
    3. basic knee and elbow strikes (again not rocket science a quick google search will show you the basic technique)
    4. and finally incase things get a little randy, a hip throw or shoulder throw (both of which can be googled to show you the form) both are again not rocket science just basic leverage, and a simple choking technique incase the fucker won't back down (everyone knows how to choke someone out, forearm around the throat and squeeze with your bicep and forearm while clutching your other hand for support.

    I suggest Krav Maga/Jiu Jitsu/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/Boxing.

    These are your best bets.

People suggesting MMA and Thai boxing are just not thinking straight.

If you're at the club, and someone pushes you around, you dont have 10 feet of room to roundhouse kick him, nor lying around on the ground wrestling.

Punches/blocks/throws/locks is all street fighting is about. So consider the above mentioned arts.

(I'm a black belt in taekwondo, with some krav-mage, wing-tsun, and jiu jitsu)

You must be 11 and get into pansy fights.

Skill is everything unless you've been completely blindsided.

Wing Chun, It's Practical and you don't need extra ordinary levels of fitness to do it.

Mixed Martial Arts will give you the best chances in the street, since it incorporates lots of different fighting styles.

But you're right, go fight. What can you know about yourself until you've been in a fight?

    Good luck, man!

Aikido. All defensive martial arts. We take their energy and use it against them never throwing the first punch and never being touched. The test for advancing in belts is by sparing multiple opponents without letting them land a strike on you and without you disarming them but only evading and fending. However you learn weak points on the body and learn how to break arms and legs with minimum amount of pressure, making this technique extremely lethal. It's an extremely hard martial arts, but if your looking to defend yourself and not be the guy to strike first this is the perfect martial arts for you.
