How many languages can you speak?

I'm an arab from Jordan living abroad in europe (foreign exchange, currently 2nd year university) and I've noticed that the major chunk of people here only speak one language. This made communication with them much more difficult. Some KNOW how to speak english but avoid it at all costs. It's very frustrating. I've also heard that many people in the USA only speak english, and some speak spanish (but only because its mandatory in some schools).

I personally speak 3 languages fluently and am learning a fourth. I don't know if its just me with a passion for languages or what, but the vast majority of the people from my country spoke at least english AND arabic fluently. Arabic being the first language.

I currently speak Arabic, English, German & I'm learning french.
My best friend speaks Arabic, English, German & French fluently and is learning Japanese.

that is so impressive! I am very jealous. I am half hispanic (my dad speaks fluent spanish/english). Unfortunately i only speak english fluently. I have oftentimes been upset that my dad did not speak/teach more spanish around me when i was young. I always wish I could speak more languages. It can only benefit you. I am currently enrolled in a spanish class in college...hopefully that helps :)

I took 2 years of Spanish in high school and can only say numbers up to 6. I'm also half Portuguese and can still only speak English. I'm very impressed by those of you who can speak 3 or more languages. I can't even imagine how difficult that must have been to learn.

I'm soo fuckin' tired of people saying that they speak "Chinese", I mean like, seriously? Chinese isn't a language, you either speak Cantonese or Mandarin, or some other dialect out of the hundreds of dialects... Lets say for example that you know Mandarin, and I know Cantonese, I went up to you and started talking in Cantonese, now both Cantonese and Mandarin are a Chinese language, but could you understand me? Chances are no, you can't... So fix it...

    I speak Cantonese and English...

    Dude, you mad brother...?

If someone says they speak "CHINESE", they should know what dialect it is, instead of just saying they speak "CHINESE". People should have been taught that at the very beginning when they were learning...

What do you mean "its just easier chinese"? That makes absolutely no sense, what so ever...

Why do I need to ask what dialect they speak, while they should have stated that in the beginning, what a waste of time.

Stop typing broken English: "its just easier chinese".

    LAUGH OUT LOUD!

I know what every US university teaches: Mandarin (Simplified characters, with only a little traditional)

There are some Universities in the United States that teach Cantonese Chinese.

Oh well I suppose you can find a class for any language and any dialog.. I just think, for someone who isn't intentionally looking into a specific dialect for work purposes or whatever, Mandarin would be the default choice

Also, I didn't understand your signature for a second, I was like "is it a year...? Where's 年? olol, leet"

In my opinion, to those people who're looking into learning a Chinese language, they should start with Cantonese, as it has nine tones instead of four tones compared to Mandarin. The majority of Chinese people in any Chinatown can speak Cantonese, and it's used in a lot of places like Hong Kong, Guangdong province, Macau, and et cetera, so it will become useful one day. Also, learning nine tones will help you with the four tones in Mandarin, since I'm pretty sure they share the same tones, but words are pronounced differently, but I'm sure they use it.
