Lifting - does it stunt your growth?

ITT everyone who has weightlifted posts their age and height when they started lifting and their current height.

Godmode for people who also post their brother/mother/father's height(s).

Lifting - does it stunt your growth?

OK there's proof it stunts your growth, i think mine has been stunted too:
started weights at 15: size 5'5
Now I'm 23 and my height is only 5'7
both my parents are 6'1 and my brother is 6'3 so there's your proof. I am a very keen weightlifter though if you do it moderately you sould be fine.
    Hope this helps

Lifting - does it stunt your growth?

Started lifting when I was 14 and don't remember what height but I think about 5'7''ish. I'm 19 now and I am a hair under 5'11''. My dad is 6' and brother is 6'1''. I think it may have a bit, but not enough to where I would change it if I could go back.

Lifting - does it stunt your growth?

Starting lifting at around 14 years old is perfectly fine, and once you reach 16 you can start to lift heavy weight and do deadlifting/squats which are the most likely to stunt your growth if you're using heavy weight.

In this case it means to slow down or stop you from growing

Lifting - does it stunt your growth?

ive wrestled and played football mostly growing up.
lifting weights really should wait till ur 16.
i was always told that it could stunt ur growth. not sure either way

example: my buddy's childhood friend who was 3 yrs younger then me was doing roids in 8th grade and benching 280-300 at 14 yrs old. and he was only 175 weight 5;8 weight. his chest never developed correctly he didnt fill out portionately

i didnt start lifting till i was 15-16 yrs old. my dads 5'9 and im like 5'10 185
    bench 250-260.

Yeah, I was considered somewhat tall in eighth grade. Now I'm short, compared to everyone else.

Lifting - does it stunt your growth?

I'm 5'9' and a half. Considering starting a proper weights program next year (in 7 weeks). I'd like to gain weight (in the form of mostly muscle) but I am NOT willing to sacrifice height for it. It seems that lifting weights actually can stunt your growth, and it has not been proven otherwise. I know this is a stupid way to look at it, but are the risks really worth the reward?

They do if you lift too heavy at too young an age (when you're still growing).

You break your epiphyseal plates and thus your bones won't keep growing as they should and tada, growth stunted.

Wish someone told me this before.

Lifting - does it stunt your growth?

I started working out when I was 18 (20 now) and haven't grown any taller since. I'm sure I was near my max height anyway.

There is proof that heavy weightlifting when young does stunt your growth.

Really, you won't stunt your growth unless you're doing heavy heavy weights. Mainly when you do heavy weights & sets on work outs like squats or deadlifts. So, if I was you, I'd lift, but stay away from doing hundreds and hundreds of pounds on the squats or deadlifts, atleast until you're older. For a leg work out, I suggest running.

For myself, I hope since i'm 18, that i'll grow atleast a couple more inches within the next 2 years while I still can. I rather would have been tall then started working out, so no, not really worth it. I do have a massive upperbody though. Depends how you look at it, i'm short but no one messes with me.

Lifting - does it stunt your growth?

I started working out for football in grade 8 with my friend. His dad was a chiropractor and made a proper work out schedule for us. My current height is 6'4 and I believe he is 6 feet tall exactly. For reference my father was 6'3 but has shrunk to 6'2 and a half, my mother is 5'9, my older sister (around the same height as my mother) and my youngest sister is 5'10-11.
