    TPB and Legal Threats

I know that some of you use the infamous Pirate Bay and I was cruising their blog and reading up on them and I found their legal threats section about people or business that had emailed them concerning legal action. I read through the mails and then their responses and they are incredibly childish in response. It made me laugh, but it also made me lose some respect for them as an organization. Though what can I expect from a group of pirates.

    Discuss.

Go to the main page, under search bar you should see "legal threats" all the emails are in there.

Yeah, I read them all last year, some of them are quite childish to be honest, I haven't really lost any respect from them as they didn't have any to begin with. One or two of them made me laugh though.

You don't have to have respect for them to use their site. It's a great site, that's made everyone's life , that uses it, easier and cheaper. I just taught my dad how to torrent the other day and he uses TPB and Demonoid all the time and doesn't get involved with the politics.

It's my opinion that thier cause is worth figthing for in a more dignified way than they do , but I suppose they don't because they will always be seen just how you said, a bunch of pirates.

I mean we all use it, but arguing the way they do just makes them look like a bunch of trolls and it isn't helping the cause.

What cause lol? They knowingly distribute copyrighted goods, there is no revolution to be had there. A free internet (what I'm assuming you mean by 'the cause') is not the same as all virtual goods being free lol. The emails are not really surprising to me, nothing about the site screams white-hat.

If they can take down TPB they can take down the free distribution of information. That's the cause.

As much as none of us will enjoy admitting it, TBP probably SHOULD be taken down. I'd be incredibly saddened by it, but think about it lol... It's a site dedicated solely to pirating copyrighted works. It's one thing if it's some random site that also happens to have links to copyrighted material, but that's just not the case with TBP.

Just for reference, I've pirated like 30GB of music and 100GB+ worth of games/movies, so I'm not some whiteknight or anything. I'm just speaking in realistic terms. There is no 'cause' surrounding TBP, what you're trying to say is more than a stretch at best. It would be different if the site had content other than copyrighted material. It's like if someone posted a link to a torrent here at Sythe (just an example, I know it's against the rules), if the government shut down Sythe yeah that would be a problem.. but TBP I could see the justification for being shut down as it serves no purpose other than pirating of copyrighted materials.

What is that book? I want a copy. That is quite hilarious.

TPB is more of an ideology, as well as a place to get games and music. I mean if they take down the TPB then what says they won't start censoring the internet and prevent our free speech. I am a US citizen and I enjoy my freedoms here, but if you let them then the US will try to police the entire world.

I can see where you're coming from and I am strongly opposed to censorship as well, but let's be real here. The concerns with things like SOPA was that it could wind up effecting innocent bystanders and bring down webgiants like YouTube and Facebook. Yeah it would suck if TPB went under, but I don't think any of us could say in good faith that TPB didn't have it coming. The line has to be drawn somewhere, I think we can all agree on that.

I see the point you are making, and I would be saddned if it was taken down, I'd be more scared though. If the American government can take down TPB overseas then they can take down anything. I'm not saying no one should have to pay for media, I'm just saying the government shouldn't have the power to force sites down that aren't in their jurisdiction.

Oh yeah, TPB has had it coming for a while. People are sensationalists by nature, and especially politicians who are looking at elections. That is when we get bystander casualties.

Yeah, that's the scary part for me as well. I can see where if things like this begin to happen it could get out of hand to where the US thinks it owns the internet. That's why I think we, as a society, need to work together with our mostly out of date politicians in order to draw the line. It may mean giving up certain things we enjoy now, such as TPB, but in the end it's a hell of a lot better than censorship all over the internet IMO.
