Can LoL compete with DOTA 2?

I literally just saw the DOTA 2 prize pool and my jaw dropped.

This is by far on a much much higher scale than LoL's prize pools. Do you think Riot are gonna up their game and increase the prize pool to compete with what may be a $10m prize pool this year for DOTA 2's 2014 tournament?

EDIT: keep in mind the prize pool for LoL last season was like $2m.

 

That's down to the playerbase, and LoL's player base is higher, there's no reason why it wouldn't be higher than what Dota's is if Riot did something similar. I would love it personally but it's whether Riot would actually want to do it or not.

 

Riot doesn't have to impress people with their prize pool because people play their game.

The prize pool is crowd-funded; of course it's higher. LoL already has higher viewership with a much bigger player base, so they don't need (and probably don't want) to do anything similar.

How are they bribing people with money? That prize pool is for all the pro players they have.

 

If $2.50 from every RP purchase went to the pro prize pool, that number would be shattered. Riot cares too much about money to give it back to the players like that.

 

LoL is already and has been more popular. The logic behind Dota2's prizepool is to attract new players, where as Riot are already substantially ahead in players, there is no need for them to do such.

Also that Valve would have far more funds for such things

 

they wanna show they got the money.

 

As far as I know, valve isn't 'funding' it, most of that prize pool is actually coming from that compendium thing.

I agree, if even 20% of all RP purchases went towards the prize pool for LoL, my guess is that the number would be around what DOTA 2 has at the moment.

 

I tried Dota 2.. didn't really like it. I guess I never REALLY learned how to play Dota 2 before I quit, but I was used to LoL and I like LoL a lot more.

 

Like everyone else stated LoL has player and viewerbase.. it doesn't need player funded competitions too prove itself and also, has the most viewers on twitch on any given day unless something specific is going on in another game..

To be honest, I'm pretty certain the LoL is the biggest video game in the world currently. Riot can EASILY up the ante and beat out DOTA if they want. Will they? Maybe. As stated before, they already have a much larger player base, which definitely gives them the opportunity to host more smaller tournaments than just one huge one.

 

The prize pool from dota 2 worlds is 100% ONLY FROM COMPENDIUM!
Valve doesn't even give a cent for prize pool. And only 25% of compendium purchases go to prize pool, so the ammount you see there, multiply x 3 = valve profit.

 

It is cool that Valve has found a creative way to pay their pros a lot more than Riot does. I would like to see Riot doing this simply so that their pros can get paid what they deserve.

 

It's kinda Riot being money hungry though. I can't even think of the amount they would make a year from just RP purchases.

They could at least give back to their pro gamers who pretty much are the idols of the game.

I doubt $10m would harm Riot's profits all that much being the biggest game atm.

I just found out that an old friend of mine that I haven't kept in touch with since 6th grade is in the pro players scene, he's supposedly making a ton of mula (from what I heard from mutual friends)
