Is Wordpress still the go to for e-commerce?

I've not had a website for any project, hobby, or anything in-between for about 4 years now.

I have an e-commerce project I'd like to start. Is wordpress still the way to go?

If it is, then can anybody please recommend a good web host that supports wordpress (user friendly)?

If I am being a boomer and wordpress is "so not with the times", then please point me inthe correct direction.

Wordpress is good, but there's a lot of paid options like shopify as well.

These usually have better support.
