Is there any reason to use a VPN on Sythe?

Is there any reason for someone to use a VPN while browsing Sythe? I know it might be handy when you torrent stuff or bot on runescape, but why use it when browsing Sythe?

Asking in an attempt to find a solution to the amount of ban evaders. Does the positives outweigh the negatives, or is it the other way around?

 

You just need a proxy, not a full fledged VPN. There are thousands upon thousands of proxies. You will never get them all.

 

Prohibiting them is a start. Right now scammers can almost do whatever they like: scam > new proxy/vpn > scam > new proxy/vpn. Pretty bad in my opinion.

 

I've only used my home ip since I joined sythe like 5 years ago. I don't have a reason to hide my ip since I'm here to do legitimate business and I have nothing to hide..

 

Prohibiting them won't do anything to stop said scammers, though.

 

How about when you're trying to surf Sythe at school. Schools tend to block certain websites, using a proxy could be users way to overcome that.

@SuF why wouldn't it? I mean it could minimize a lot of the vader activity that is around. Couldn't it?

If in doubt, just have the staff get them to post from home IP? Or is this an invalid method, considering if someone really wanted to ensure their vading techniques are hidden they would simply use a different home IP, aka a friends, family etc.

 

The staff is not going to spot check every one of the thousands of people that post on Sythe every day. That leaves just banning all known VPN / proxy IPs and such a list is extremely hard to compile and it's super easy to switch IPs so it's basically pointless. There is minimal gain and huge amounts of efforts that would be better put elsewhere.

 

Have you ever tried to register / log-in to a forum using a proxy? Proxies suck and you basically cant do anything with them. By blocking VPN's / known proxies such as TOR and Hotspotshield we should already impact a majority of the ban evaders.

Just tested a couple proxies:

You are using free web based proxies. If you pay for a proxy you just add it directly into your browser or computer settings and everything will work with no issues.

Also good luck blocking all of TOR. There are over 900 exit nodes today and they change all the time. There is no effective way to block them. I guess you could pull in the list every day and add it to the blocking list but again I don't think what you gain (basically nothing) is worth the time. Ban evaders will find a way around any ban you give so why bother.

I'd also like to point out all you have to do to get around an IP ban is disconnect your modem for 5 minutes and plug it back it. You will almost certainly have a new IP. Banning IPs is essentially pointless and will end up blocking legitimate users.

 

Just thought about it a bit. We dont need to monitor everyone. We could choose to only monitor people who donate, as they are most likely the ones that will scam a high amount of $/GP. New people, who dont donate, will not be able to sell anything anyway. Additionally people who make a shop (questing, skilling, etc) could also be monitored as the amount of people that donate everyday isnt that big afaik.
