when there are sufficient funds to cover for a normal standard life, more money will not make you happier. in a situation where there's not enough money to pay bills or even buy food, ofcourse money will increase happiness.

Not having already learned to appreciate what you have, how would one then become happy with currency?

Material possessions do not generate happiness, the brain does.

"If you're not happy here and now, you never will be." - Taisen Deshimaru

We have choice, in the present moment, to feel how we want to feel. If you want to feel sad, you feel sad. If you want to feel happy, you feel happy. Even in the most depressive or anxious moments, bringing yourself to the present will almost always give you a control over your emotional state. Observing your emotions, without bias, sort of makes them disappear, or, at least, you become content, and that reduces your anxiety/depression, resulting in muscle relaxation and reduced pain responsiveness.

Greed very much so takes away from happiness, but the need for money does not. Anything that detracts you from the present moment can be said to be a happiness detractor, as it is only in the present moment that we are able to choose how we feel. Money, though, has become an essential part of our daily survival. When your focus is solely on making more money, though, is when it becomes a problem to your happiness.
