Two university students dress as Twin Towers for Halloween Event

The two points I want to discuss are:

Do you find this offensive/distastefull/unaccceptable given the context?

Do you believe the club in question (Rosie's) should have allowed them to stay, or indeed enter, and win, the competition?

My personal opinion on this article is, that, in essence, they should have known better, given their age, that this might have caused offence. Chester Uni is an international uni, and consideration should have been given to other students, especially American students, attending the event. I believe that both girls in question simply did not realise the consequences their actions would have.

My other issue is the management of Rosie's. Complaints were made to the management upon the girls entering the nightclub, however these complaints were played down by the management. This was a poor choice. Further, letting them enter, and win, the competition, was in poor taste, and the responsibility for this lies firmly with the management of Rosie's.

I felt this would be a great topic for discussion, not just because I am a student at Chester uni

Well I was at a concert and two guys were dressed as zombie versions of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold (Columbine Killers). They didn't get kicked out or anything. Mind you this was a concert, so it's quite a different event.

I don't really know what to say to this honestly, people like acting stupid and doing stupid things to gain attention. This is just another one of those many instances. Interested to see how this unfolds any further, if it all.

 

I don't mind, plus it doesn't bother me so yeah but on the other side its not nice for them to dress up like that after the disaster that happened to peoples families.

 

Two dumb bimbos...what can you do. Giving them publicity doesnt help, oh and it was 12 years ago. Please relax...

 

It personally doesn't bother me, however I think they're very disrespectful as they haven't took into account other peoples feelings.

I'd personally kick them out if I was the club owner, not because it offends me, but because they could be offending a lot of people joking about the mass murder of thousands of people in an extremely patriotic country.

 

I don't personally find it offensive. It is distasteful as there were plenty of other things they could have dressed as.

I agree with Shoop on this one. Would have kicked them out to prevent anyone from being offended.

 

Playing devils advocate...

If someone, or a group of individuals were to complain about people dressed as witches/wizards, as they find the association to witchcraft offensive, would you not also have to eject the witches/wizards to make it fair?

Where do you draw the line in "being offended"?

 

I don't personally find it very offensive, especially given the context. Although admittedly I don't usually allow myself to feel offended by anything, because being offended is just a defense against something you're uncomfortable with.

I don't believe that the club should or shouldn't have. As a private business you should have the right to allow and enforce any kind of dress code that you desire.

The thing is witches and wizards are not real(unfortunately) nor did they kill 3000 people.

 

Because rather than simply posting the article in Gen Disc, I've highlighted a couple of points I want to discuss, these relate to how offence is taken, and to what extend someone has to "be offended" by before action is taken to remove said offence.

 

Genocide.

 

I agree that it probably would be better suited for general discussion, I don't really mind it being put here though.

There is a difference between being offended and being ethically opposed to something haha.

I'm not necessarily "offended" by mention of genocide per se, that obviously doesn't mean that I support the practice however.

No one cares. People die, you will die, I will die. People get murdered all the time.

Yes, if I had family that died, I might feel sad since of course the jokes will remind me of the loved ones I lost, but I would never say I took some huge offence and make a big deal and say I was distressed.

I certainly hope everyone here finds that costume suitable, because the towers are just as wrecked as their faces are. They're 19 and they look like they're in their 30's to 40's.

I would hope there were better costumes, but again who cares about some night club competition...

 

Personally doesn't bother me but I do find it slightly disrespectful. People now days get so butthurt over the littlest things like the Washington redskins names, I'm swedish and im not offended by the minnesota vikings. I don't see how so many people are upset with it.

And yes they should compete, they are wearing costumes.

 

The only reason it is bothering anyone is because it is being brought up. People are letting it reach the victim's immediate family. It doesnt bother me or should bother anyone much unless they knew the victims.

Millions of other people died in other countries, innocent people as well, yet they dont get the attention because it wasnt seen by the public. When you see it you let it take its toll on you. Im sure these 2 bimbos meant no offense to the immediate family, if they knew there would be relatives or good friends of the victims, they wouldnt have gone with that costume. It was done in another country. Not to mention I doubt they even expected to make it in the news. It's the news that's baiting the families of the victims, they are the ones reminding them.

 

It will be offensive to some and not to others. As I'm from New York, I find it offensive. It's best to ignore these people and not make it news. You're giving them the attention they want.

 

Its just a joke and nothing more than college kids being college kids should be taken from it.

 

My only gripe is people who got upset about the girl who dressed as a Boston Marathon victim. If you're going to victimize her, then do it to these girls also. At the very least be consistent!
