Something my science teacher told me.

Firstly i'm not sure if this goes here or general/off topic.

Well in class this year my science teacher told me that the top scientists believe Death is a biological defect, that humans were meant to live forever but some error or something in the dna or something like that, I was only really listening to the beggining.

Anyone have more info on this?

It's like copying a video casette - each time you do it, you lose quality. Our cells are the same.

Well, normally, that would work, but the human body is a complex thing.

Cells die, and we don't replace them fast enough.

That slows down as we get older, leaving less and less cells to deal with things. Also, some situations, if you have a cut or something and you are elderly, you might need serious attention even though it's a cut. Cells go and clot the cut, and that leaves lack of cells throughout your body.

Again, this was just 5 minute research, but still.

Spot on, the longer we live the worse our cells become.

    Nothing more too it.

Yes, but the topic was about it being a defect. I've never really thought of that >.> It does make sense. Why should our cells have less quality?

We could live forever immagine how terrible the world would be at the momment like famous people hitler, jack the ripper all these serial killers and evil people would still be alive (but again what is the point of war if you cant die?)

If given the right dna strand that allowed for the cells to continue to reproduce at a steady level, and given the fact that you couldn't step foot outside your home, or you would have to live in a controlled evironment, then you could.

BAHAHAHA! Sorry... that what some dude at my chuch told me when I was 8 (I didn't buy it then). The thing is- not everything in our body is being constantly replaced. For example: If somebody looses cartilage in their knee (happened to my dad) that will never be replaced by nature.

You might live a great deal longer- but not forever. I recall reading somewhere that if there was no desease, and the aging process was lessened (meaning that people wouldn't grow old and weak) then the maximum somebody could live is 100,000 years, as the longer you live, the greater chance that something will happen to you (remember- not all deaths are caused by illness or old age.

Given a controlled environment, anything is possible. You are right, not all deaths are disease or age caused, which can only leave accidents. If you have nothing to "cut" yourself on, then you should be fine.

Our cells die. They don't reproduce fast enough. Just imagine, if we could make cell reproduction faster, we could live forever ;)

Humans living forever would be a horrible thing, because literally there would be maybe 10-20 billion of us fighting for limited resources and destroying everything.

Regarding whether it'd be a good thing or not, I suppose the "defect" would, essentially, be the fact that our cells don't reproduce fast enough. However, if everyone in society had this defect, it wouldn't be a defect. It would be a way of nature.

You can call it a defect, but that can be used for many things. It's just the way we were structured.

Well your science teacher is an idiot I have to say. Just the pollution in the water we drink and the air we breath can mutate our cells. Nature intends for us to reproduce and die so our species can evolve.

He's not talking about immortality. People could still get killed if they didn't die of old age. And Hitler did not die of old age.

I don't think he is an idiot. I think it's probably true but yea the things we do would mutate us.

If we never died, we would have to be the perfect species to begin with. Death prompts natural selection, evolution, etc and without death, we could not improve. Also, if we never died, the world would overflow in days. If immortality were to be possible, there would have to be a very low birth rate as well.

Edit: Also, dying of "old age" is only a term, it's usually worn organ failure. People don't just die because they have reached a certain age.

i think this wouldnt be total immortality but long life spans. I think the only defects in us are the ones we created through creating more and more for what we didnt need, screwing ourselves over.
