Iphone Unlock Questions

Hey all,
I have a question about unlocked iphones. So currently I have an iphone 5s and I'm looking to switch to an Iphone 7. I plan on buying the unlocked iphone from Apple. Can I just switch my sim card into the unlocked iphone 7 without going through my carrier? I have this issue is because I am under my dad's plan however he refuses to change it for me, so I am going to change it myself. Do I need to go to my carrier to activate my iphone 7?

P.S. My carrier is sprint

 

Yeah, as long as it's unlocked you should be fine. I'm not 100% but I think you can just have the SIM card inserted

 

You should be good to go, you might have to modify the APN settings to get data working, you might even have to call Sprint and let them know you switched phones, but according to Apple, it'll work

I have to still activate it with sprint and they charge me extra $30 to activate new phone lmao.
