    Laptop help

I'm going to be buying a laptop within the next day or so while there are good deals at a shop near me. Which laptop out of these would be better: http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XC8550/asus-k55vd-sx234s-notebook http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XC8177/asus-k53e-sx1870v-notebook.jsp

I'm leaning towards the cheaper one because i don't really see how the other one is $100 better (I don't know much about computers though :p). I'll be using the laptop for general web browsing, botting and playing runescape (one account, not multiple bots), and maybe doing some video editing or playing some games like minecraft (nothing as big as cod/skyrim/bf3 etc). If there is a better laptop than those ones above that I can buy from/in Australia that is under $550 then feel free to link it ;)

    Thanks a lot :)

Edit: Is this better than the above laptops? I think my decision is between the cheaper asus and this one now> Toshiba Satellite C850/02D Notebook

The cheapest one only has Intel HD graphics and no dedicated GPU, so rule that one out as games won't be played very good.

Toshiba has better graphics than the Asus, but has 2GB less ram, 250GB less hard drive space, and a slightly slower processor.

So in short they will both be good, just one is better at games, and one is better at multitasking, and has some more HDD space.

The more expansive one has a dedicated graphics card but it is pretty bad. The onboard graphics (intel HD 4000) are nearly as good.

The other one on the hand as intel 3000 graphics and no GPU. Which means it can't even run RuneScape fluidly on max graphics.

Try to look for a laptop with a i5 3210m / 4gb ram and you are set. No need for dedicated GPU with intel graphics 4000.

I really like this 11.6" notebook. Runs windows 8 and has a touch screen. I tried it in the store and it runs very smooth, just as smooth as my own laptop with an i7. Would be really nice to carry around etc.

FWIW, having the dedicated card in the ASUS k55 you listed(the more expensive one with the 610m) will help you drastically when using CUDA-optimized programs for video editing.Basically instead of sending the load over to the processor for it to generate the edited video, it will send the operation to the GPU where the graphics card can convert/perform editing operations MUCH faster than the CPU can.. by use of it's CUDA cores.
While the 610M is Nvidia's most entry-level dedicated card of the current generation, it does feature better performance than the HD 4000 integrated chipset. It's only marginally better in games(10-25%depending on the game) but with the addition of the other features the card has, it's definitely a worthy expense IMO.

being as how I don't see a toshiba listed anywhere, just two ASUS laptops...my recommendation goes to the K55. 3rd-gen processor, 6 gigs of ram, and a dedicated GPU makes it the obvious choice to me.

Most games will lag on lowest settings with Intel HD Graphics 3000.

yup, if you do decide to settle for an integrated card, at LEAST get a third-gen ivy bridge processor. These have Intel HD 4000 on board, which is a big step up from the HD 3000.

If you want to get the best bang for your buck out of an integrated card, though, you should look into one of the Llano-based AMD processors. these utilize what is probably the best integrated chipsets available right now. Plus, they're much cheaper. For your needs, this will suit you very well.

Yea Intel HD 4000 will be my minimum i think. It's hard to find a decent laptop that fits my budget though, so i might need to get some more money :p
