    Well what you'd do in order to get the bases equal is take the root of 9, which is 3. The equation would then look like:

    3^x = (3^2) ^x + 1

    Expand

    3^x = 3^2x + 2

    Set exponents equal to each other.

    x = 2x + 2
    x = -2

    Let me know if you need anymore help.
