So I'm constantly hearing from people that it's best to learn 2-3 champs for about 2 roles to climb most efficiently.

I've also heard that it's best to learn 2-3 champs for EVERY role so that way you can fill and let others get their best roles.

What do you guys think? Do you think option #1 or #2 works best to climb? If you vote other, post what you think works best. (ex: learn 1-2 champs and stick with those in any role no matter what). Most everyone has a main and sticks to that in nearly every situation possible but sometimes they veer away from that if they aren't optimal in a specific role.

I understand there are a lot of factors that go into it but just in general.

-Main one champ in your preferred role
-Have high knowledge of 2-3 champs in every other role, with varying specialties.

EG - Know an assassin AND utility mage for midlane. Tank and bruiser for top, etc.

Depends on the individual player. Some people I know can only play 1 or 2 champs at their ranked level and any other role/ champ they do horrible or subpar at best. Other people play 15-25 champs consistently. I think it is just what you like playing and if you get bored after playing the same champ 10 games in a row. I know people in Diamond 2 who only play Thresh or Fiddlesticks and others who play 15-20 champs pretty consistently in the same elo.

Personally I have a small champion pool for mid and only 1 champ for top.
My main pool is Zed, Yas
    Top - Riven

I can play them effectively in every matchup, you really don't need to master every role. Just have the basic knowledge so you wouldn't get crushed.

You cant say you 'Main' a lane if you only know 1 champion, at least know 5 in your main role WELL ENOUGH to play at you current elo. For the rest of the roles, 2-3 is fine.

Such as for me, ADC main, I play Vayne/Kalista/Lucian/Jinx/Graves/Ashe well enough to play in diamond (granted yes, a smaller champ pool for adcs)
But in my other roles i know 2-3 champs just so if i dont get my chosen role, i have them to fall back on.

    Thresh/Leona/Braum support, Fizz/Ekko/Yasuo mid, Heca/Ryze top, Yi/Lee jungle.

There are two important aspects when it comes to playing and being able to play in high elo.

The first is actual understanding of the game, wave control, rotations, enemy pathing, etc etc etc. If this is superior, you will generally be able to play a vast amount of champs at a high level even if you aren't as mechanically superior as other people, you will compensate through your game knowledge.

The second is raw mechanics, and that apparent from having it naturally, occurs from simply spamming a champion and knowing its in's and out's in different team comps, match ups, situations, etc.

If you spam a champ, you won't necessarily get the requisite game knowledge outside of that champion, and if you play multiple champs, unless you're mechanically gifted, you might not be as mechanically superior.

In my opinion game knowledge trumps all, it pains me when I see D1 - Master players having appalling game knowledge. Having said that, in order to actually climb, you're better off spamming a few champions, but once you get high elo immediately attempting to expand your champion pool and learn different roles, and actually learn how to play the game.

My personal opinion is really far from any of the options.

I started out at Bronze 1 after placements this season. I went through all sorts of trolls, feeders, leavers and got to see first hand view of elohell.

I played only one champion 99% of the time, the 1% was of me being dumb and giving other people my role.

I play one role 99.9% of the time, only time I gave my role away was in placements and if I had faith in that guy.

And after 1-2 months, with casual playing (no HARDCORE fetish), I stand at Platinum 5.

Conclusion, play one champion, master it, play it well, carry games, win games, and you will find yourself climbing the slope like no other player could. I have friends that were in Gold when I started in Bronze 1. Now they're still in Gold 1. Can't even get past that series because of the amount of trollers/feeders. I had my fair share of it.

And that's right you guessed it, it's Shaco. You can follow my path, or take the unbeaten one and choose a new champion to master. Oh, and trust me, my path wasn't easy. Every game I played, at least 2 enemies got upgraded oracles, and everyone was buying pink wards early game.

There's no need to learn too many champions I feel, it's not like you're going pro or anything and need to have a large pool to avoid getting banned out... Sure it would be helpful but I feel like you are better off investing the time into mastering a handful of champions to help you climb.
