Help me choose a laptop please.

I'm looking to buy a laptop that I can use for gaming and programming purposes.

I've some thoughts on buying 1 of the following laptops:

    Alienware M14X

    Dell Inspiron 5521

    Dell XPS 15

I've a budget of around $1200. So yeah suggest me the best I can get with that budget.

    Thanks :)

For about $1200, you can get some pretty nice setups.

$1400 Asus (Very well known brand of gaming laptop):
    http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-G750JW-D...F8&qid=1374444012&sr=1-1&keywords=ASUS+G750JW

    $1200 Asus
    http://www.amazon.com/Republic-Game...&qid=1374444138&sr=1-2&keywords=gaming+laptop

$1300 MSI (Probably your best bet)
    http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GT70-2OC-...12&sr=1-7&keywords=ASUS+G750JW#productDetails

    $1200 Dell
    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellst...id=inspiron-17r-se-7720&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19

Personally i would go with Asus. They have the biggest name in gaming laptops. With alienware, you're paying a high premium for the name (Like a hollister shirt). Also, look around, Asus has more PLU's than you can immagine. And you can grab an old one, that can still crank out some power on ebay for $800. Just search for the "Asus G73JH" on ebay.

lol. look for a clevo. Youll get more from a clevo than you're gonna get from ANY thing else youre looking at... or whats been suggested. Plus they're fully upgradeable. 2 years from now when that GPU is getting a little weak, put the latest and greatest MXM-based card in there and keep on goin'.

Otherwise, I'd recommend an MSI, any of their laptops will suit your bill. The GE-series, GX-series, or GT-series. And watch out... MSI's have speakers that will blow you away...it's their strong suit. Best speakers in the industry hands down. My previous GT70 simply shocked me.

ASUS has only JUST caught on with the rest of the crowd and started offering top-of-the-line GPU's in their laptops(the G750 has the GTX780M), but they're still on the pricy side. I think they're hideous, heavy monsters personally...but their cooling systems are great.

In your price range, I'd look at the Clevo P157SM(sager NP8250) with the GTX 770m, or the MSI GX60 with amd's top video card the Radeon 8970M

if you want to look at something REALLY unique and highly impressive, look at the new Lenovo Y510P, has DUAL GTX 750M GPU's in SLI. Very powerful notebook aswell...heard great things about it

Can you please suggest me the best out of the 3 names I've given. I can't seem to find out any store in my country that has those laptops by MSI, Asus etc.

    Thanks anyways :)

What country are you living in?

I wouldn't suggest the m14x, cuz its already using outdated last-gen hardware. Too much to spend on old parts.

The same goes for the 5521 Inspiron, but it's using an ULV core i5 processor(MUCH weaker than what a normal mobile I5 processor is capable of) and it's using a somewhat low-range GPU.

the XPS15 is the top pick in my opinion...although the GPU options are rather weak.

XoticPC.com will sell you a much better laptop, and ship anywhere. Start there, and pick a REAL laptop.

I live in India, but I see that buying it online is way much cheaper than buying from a nearbuy store. M14X Value according to what I found on Amazon.Com (US) is $1199.00-$1499.00 and the price in my nearby store is $2490.00 that is way expensive than it should be. Suggest a laptop that I can buy at a budget of $1200.00 and get good specifications as well.

You might be better posting on a site specifically for Indian purchasers.

We can't really tell you what the prices are like for where you live.

That being said, I hear many good things about Alienware.

Out of what you posted, the alienware is probably the only one that could really be used for gaming. The others may have the specs to push some decent graphics or crunch some numbers, but chances are the cooling is horrible. Alienware also uses higher grade parts, meaning they should last longer.

Honestly, I bought an expensive laptop and I regret it like hell. It quickly becomes obsolete and they're not easy to upgrade. Save yourself some money and get one that does just enough for you, not one to max out Skyrim or whatever the new benchmark game is.
