    My future...?

Hey guys i have been thinking alot o my future and i tought id share it with you.

To start off im 17 im from the netherlands, i do the highest level of education available (im not a nerd cause ibdont study at all) its called vwo and i have 1 year left before uni. Uni here is way different than in the us.

I have been cookiing since the age of 8 and its my biggest passion in the whole world but the job is accesable for "dumb" people you dont need a high education so my mom says do something else.

The next thing that comes to my mind is the army since my granddad was in there and i like to serve my country.

My mom wants me to be a brainsurgeon or something but shebsays she always be proud but i think if i get a job where i dont use my full intelligence she won tlike it.
Since most pwople are older and wiser can uou give e your honest opinion?
sorry for the bad writing im on my phone:)

    Thanks,
    Regards Milan

Well if you look at the situation like this:

Cooking is a no-go from your mother since dumb people are able to do it. Your next thought is to join the army - dumb people are able to get into the army as well, what would your mother think about that?

It sounds like you have a real passion for being a chef however. Despite it being nice if you have approval from your parents at the end of the day it doesn't matter too much. Do you really think you would be happy settling for a firmament of life to impress your parents while yearning to cook? I think you will regret it if you do not at least give it a go.

If your passion is cooking then go to a school for culinary arts.

You're on the right path if anything. The netherlands has it easy.

Do what you love. Intelligence is shown in all pathways. I'm fortunate enough to have my parents approve of my pathway but regardless do what you love and they should be happy for you.

As people have been saying do what you love and chefs that become famous or own really great restaurants earn a shit load of money, just because there isn't as much intelligence in being a chef as there is a doctor doesn't mean you can't earn bank.

Being a chief is not for dumb people!... Try running a kitchen with 100's of orders coming in and out of the kitchen and having to manage a whole menu etc etc... Not for the dumb I would say. I understand being a chief in like a cafe or McDonalds is easy, but high end restaurant; woah that would be hard :p

    Firstly it's Chef. Not Chief.

    On topic:
I'm currently started my first year for my diploma in the culinary arts. Culinary Arts, it's ALOT more in detail then people think.

People think that a person that flips low grade pieces of beef at McDonalds can be considered as a chef, and i'm not going to even bother stating how wrong that is.

People who think that to become a chef will take 1 year are completely wrong. With 1 year, a person will only get a certificate in food and production. To atleast have a diploma it takes from 3-5 years up too 10 -12 years for masters in it.

Personally I'm teling you this straight up. If it is your legit passion then follow it. You're better off working 45-50 years doing something you LOVE then doing something you dislike, or just do it for the money.

Let me give you an example. It takes around 5 years to have a higher nation diploma, and 7 years to be a bachelor of honors in the culinary arts. after you do these years you're not going to be working in a cafe, or in macdonalds

I'm currently going for BAHons and wish to go abroad and work in a hilton hotel, which pay extremely well and not to forget it's a 5 star hotel found around the world.

Edit, there's alot of areas where you can specialise in. Personally i wish to become a patissier, which is a pastry chef. You can specialise in any other sector, from sous chefs to executive chefs to patissier's .

    Also i wish to inform you about one thing, studying to become a chef isn't simply about cooking. Alot of factors kick in. In my diploma we cover;
-Cooking (obvious, practical 14 hours a week)
    -Pastry (6 hours a week.)
    -Accounting
    -Mathematics
    -Business Communication
    -2 Different Languages
    -IT
    -Larder theory
    -Cooking theory
    -Food Commodities (theory mainly)

    edit;
In order to become one of those "famous" people you must be extremely skilled. These "famous people" are the owners of Michelin Star restaurants. In order to be presented a Michelin Star the staff must perfectly execute alot of extremely complicated dishes. Practise makes perfect, people like Marco pierre white or gordon ramsay have been cooking for around 20 years before they where even awarded 1 Michelin star.

It may sound very cliché, but do what makes you happy.
I'm coming out of uni soon with the potential to make a lot of money, however I plan on quitting and doing something I enjoy after a few years.

Being bored and stressed every day isn't a proper life IMO.
If you wanted to work in McDonald's or something, I'd attempt to swade you away as you wouldn't be able to live on that kind of money. But a chef is a decent job if you get yourself into a good restaurant or even open your own.

tbh even if your mother will not approve of culinary school, that doesn't mean you have to give up your passion for cooking.

You can always go back to school or keep the cooking as a hobby.

As a side not: I don't want to discourage you, but I do believe that the chef field may be quite saturated. You may struggle and never really find a good opportunity in the cooking industry. Find something that you're good at, not just something that you enjoy. If you are good at it AND you enjoy it, then more power to you!

You might not want to disappoint your parents, but it isn't your mum's life. She doesn't have to go to your job every day, she doesn't have to live with it. Do it for you, not anyone else. A job shouldn't be about being rich or having bragging rights - ultimately you'll be happier if you do something you enjoy and love doing rather than being financially well-off etc.

I'm not saying being a chef is inferior to anything above mentioned, just giving my opinion on the subject in general.

You could always combine your two aspirations and be a chef for the army. As they say, an army marches on it's stomach :D

This is a seriously good idea, providing you are good & manage to get a job as a personal chef for someone well off, you will do very well financially & also enjoy what you do. I have a friend of a friend who works on a private yacht (not sure who it's for I'd have to ask) but yeah he loves it, basically everyone on board waits around at different ports while they wait for the owner, which majority of the time he dosen't even use the yacht, he loves the travelling aspect too & is very well paid. I honestly didn't believe him when I found out tbh. Goodluck whatever you decide.
