I'm sure this has been asked before. But I need some tips on getting started. Should I jump straight into photoshop? I've used Paint.net for ~year but it doesn't yield the options and capabilities I want to see.

Is it also OK to learn C4D right away or should I learn a simpler program first?

Not really, I would start by just getting my feet wet w/ starting both Photoshop & C4D following tutorials on youtube & google.

I moved onto Photoshop after paint, but I really wish I'd started learning Illustrator before now (I've just started teaching myself); It's nice using vector images since theyre always clean[illustrator]. And since the two programs are compatible its worth while to try learn both as you go[Photoshop and Illustrator].

I dont have much experience with C4D but if you have time then you might as well try learn it from youtube tuts. Its quite powerful.

A few options to become familiar with in Photoshop:
-Layer options; try playing around with all those- get here by double clicking on the layer.
    -Edit>Free Transform / Transform
    -Filter>filter gallery, for different effects
-The clone stamp tool, to cover things up
-The pen tool, for smooth lines
    -dodge/burn, to lighten and darken

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to start using the trial of paint and see how it goes :)

I started off with Photoshop CS5, watched many tutorials and practiced alot too.
Eventually moved on to C4D and now use that and CS6.
In my opinion, Its all about dedication and practice.
