Why do people say "Mainstream is bad".. etc etc? And why do they not want "Mainstream" music? I'm not sure what it means, but I think people don't want to listen to it because they want to be different. What does "Mainstream music" mean? Can somebody please help me out here? ~Your Sister.
Mainstream means you've been signed to a record label, you're in the media, etc.. Indie is the opposite, you might be signed to a label but it would be a minor label, you're not in the media, less known, etc.. Like you said, people usually listen to indie music because it gives them a smug sense of superiority over the people who listen to mainstream music, when really nobody gives a shit. Indie music is good, and so is mainstream. It's about the music, not who endorses them.
Shakaka, you're not exactly wrong, but you aren't right either. When I say mainstream, I mean something that is aimed to appeal to the masses. These bands are often generic, and only really sound like the next band, which is why I don't listen to common radio. I don't like mainstream because it's so generic; there's only one flavour of music when you listen to mainstream of any genre, and it just gets boring. That's why I listen to the more obscure yet absolutely brilliant bands that the public isn't really aware of. That, and the older bands. The older bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen and so on are all unique, and they can't quite be copied. Long story short, when I listen to music, I like diversity in what I hear, not the same thing in a different order. That is why I don't like mainstream music. Because a band is popular certainly doesn't mean it's a mainstream band that I don't like though. CoB is one of my favourite bands, for example. They have a MASSIVE fanbase.
A lot of the mainstream music you will hear nowadays is untalented or maybe semi-talented artists just trying to appeal to massive audiences. Most of it is the same formula and predictable. I like to listen to artists with talent and who really know how to make good compositions, not because it's 'different'. Then again some people might just want to seem cool or want to be elitist with their music
I agree with Swan, to me "mainstream" just means what majority of people listen to. I don't like mainstream music because most of it doesn't mean anything since all the artists care about is the money and not the music. Bands that aren't mainstream do it for the music, if they wanted money they'd make mainstream music instead. So yeah, i don't listen to mainstream bands since their boring and its what everyone listens to. I like to be different and listen to bands that not everyone has heard of.
i think mainstream is just that popular music that everyone knows like trivium i dont see why people hate mainstream music or only like it listen to what sounds good not what is popular or not popular
The thing is, mainstream music sounds generic. If you don't like listening to the same thing over and over again (and if you study the genres a little bit you will notice you're hearing pretty much the same thing when you listen to mainstream) it gets really boring, and that's not what I consider to sound good. Bands that aren't geared towards everybody, the bands who aren't mainstream, they actually appeal to a niche of people, especially those who like unique or original material.
I just made a post asking for some non-mainstream music. I like alot of mainstream music, but i film and edit skateboarding videos i prefer to use non mainstream music for it.
It's about the quality of music being put out. The problem is that the current mainstream is complete garbage. It's all about DecayDance putting out lame records and rappers having their songs written for them.
