Well, as many people probably know the Win8 preview has been released.

Has anyone installed it? Any thoughts?

Windows 8.

I have not installed it but from the preview videos I thought the start page looked much like a mobile phone interface and won't be very nice on a desktop. The reason for this is that it seems the version of windows will be used for tablets. Knowing that it still seems almost to simple. I am a PC guy but I think apple will trump this easily but we'll see. I would love to see what others who have used it say. For windows it does have some nice features but nothing revolutionary.

I agree. I definitely don't like the fact that it has no start bar.
It's supposed to be faster, especially when the full version is released. But really, I'm going to stick to Win7.

XP is getting old, and Windows 7 is stable now. I'll probably stick with 7.

^I don't think W7 was ever unstable since it came out of dev/beta versions

Windows 8 is geared more towards devices with touchscreens, so it's not conducive to try and use it on a desktop with a standard mouse and keyboard.

I've had the Windows 8 developer version on my laptop since it was first released. As Mohtasa said, it's very geared towards touch devices so it's highly impractical for standard keyboard/mouse users. It's a nice OS though. Very fluid and consistent.

Windows 8.

We were having this discussion on IRC a couple days ago. The whole OS was built from the ground up for tablets. They focused on memory management (to reduce the amount of ram needed to reduce power use) and the way the CPU sleeps or something (again to reduce power use). They also added the silly metro interface and the such. I really feel like its going to be a flop when it comes to the PC market because they have to figure out what works and what doesn't to find a balance between tablets and PCs. So I'd have to hazard a bet 8 doesn't do so well but 9 will.

"Seriously they redeemed them selves with Win 7 after the Vista fiasco. And now they decide to create an even worse OS just to keep the tradition of 1 good 1 shitty OS.
Win 3.1->Win95
Win98->Win ME
Win XP-> Vista
and now.. Win &->Win 8
I am pretty sure they do it on purpose,,,,"

I thought they were releasing 8 with the 'mobile' interface as default, but with an option to use a more standard windows UI?

Windows 8.

I am using right now and have been using on and off for the past week or so. At first I had my doubts just because it was so different. After a couple of hours of messing around I started to enjoy it and now I actually love it. I know the biggest thing is "WOW the display looks like a phone that's stupid." but this is needed for the Kinect support that will be coming, especially to laptops. Searching, multi-tasking, and switching preferences are all incredibly smooth. Yes, you can easily switch over to a Windows 7 like UI by clicking the desktop option on the home screen or hitting the windows key, pressing the windows key also switches back. The way it is set up there is no need for a start bar...weird I know but seriously it's so easy to select everything that you need that would be in the start bar that I believe it is faster without. You can directly sync E-mail, Hotmail, Social Media, and your Xbox live account so all of your media is there, let alone the other apps that you can download. Want to make a short cut to a file? It appears on the "Start" page. Like I said it is so SMOOTH and EASY. Don't knock it until you try it.

Also,
This is by no means a "Shitty OS" and can in no way be compared to Vista. (Making that comment makes me think you have no idea what made Vista horrible.)

If any of you have the opportunity to try it out I highly recommend you do. Don't let the different style of UI ruin it for you.

Windows has gone downhill since XP. Best operating system ever. The GUI's are just evermore consuming, with new useless apps buttons ect that never get used. Wouldn't be surprised is 8 was rubbish. Look at Internet Explorer, the worst browser. Tremendously slow.
