Increase Your Virtual RAM

Ok, so let's say you use a lot of memory consuming programs, and your 512MB/1GB RAM just wont cut it, at that point, windows uses Virtual Memory which is basically a partition on your HD which acts like RAM. The default size for your Virtual Memory is 1521, but sometimes it is good to have a little more. Here is how you adjust the size of your Virtual Memory.

1) Go into your Control Panel

2) Go to Performance and Maintenance

3) Click on the Advanced tab

4) Under the Performance panel, click Settings

5) On the window that pops up, you should be on the "Visual Effects" tab...navigate to Advanced

6) On the bottom panel where it says "Virtual Memory," click change

7) Change the initial size to about 3000 and change the max to 4096

Congratulations, your system should now be faster and programs should run more smoothly.

For people like me who switched the Control Panel to the classic view:

1. Start

2. Control Panel

3. System

4. Click on the Advanced tab

5. On the window that pops up, you should be on the "Visual

6. Effects" tab...navigate to Advanced

7. On the bottom panel where it says "Virtual Memory," click change

8. Change the initial size to about 3000 and change the max to 4096


Remember that this is virtual memory which is hundreds of times slower then actual RAM, if you follow these exact steps your system will gain a maximum of just about 4.1GB of virtual memory which is being taken away from your hard drive.
