Immediately people took to Twitter etc. calling her a terrorist and, I quote, blaming "her kind" for 9/11.

Not only is this ridiculous seeing as she's of Indian decent, not Muslim and is American.. but by their logic then only Native Americans should be able to run for Miss America.
P.s. I'm not in any way being racist toward Muslims, just pointing out the flaws in the hate.

What I'm essentially getting at is this:
Does social media only encourage hatred toward others and should there be harsher constraints on what can be said on such sites? Discuss.

E.g. a racist remark on a football pitch sees a player facing charges and a lost job whereas such remarks on Twitter are merely "trolls" and nothing to "get wound up over".
Now, while I understand every racist comment on the internet can't be policed, there should be at least some sort of punishment for these kinds of people, whether it be put in place by Twitter themselves or legal authority.

A prime example is @transphobes. Their Twitter was suspended following reported abuse, but reinstated 48 hours later as they were entitled to [raise awareness/speak their minds]

Social media isn't to blame IMO.. People are poorly educated and make assumptions. Which most often are wrong.

 

People feel more inclined to abuse from behind a screen

 

Its stupid how much people went off about this. And the tweets were so stupid, stuff like shes not miss USA shes mrs. al-queda or mrs. 7-1-1, like seriously its 2013 and people are still thinkin like this

 

It just goes to show that although the world is supposedly united racism still runs rampant. Deplorable really.

 

She's indian. She isn't even the same religion as people who did commit the 9/11 attacks. It's just plain ignorance on an incredible level but then again people think Obama who is like half black a terrorist as well. Also being muslim doesn't make you a terrorist except in the minds of the ignorant. All religions have their extremists including Christianity yet we single out Muslims as the worst. Unfair in my opinion.

 

Not only that but america is made up of immigrants. With their logic, no white people should be allowed to enter or win because they're of European descent.

 

People believe what they see in the media only because that's where they get the majority of their legitimate information from. Race means nothing in my opinion but i can't say that i don't understand some peoples opinions on certain types of people. (No i'm not racist) but people who come from certain areas generally seem to have the same mind set on different races (including white people)

 

and to think these same people are allowed to vote.

Look where you are drawing the comments from... Twitter? These people aren't leaders of our country, they don't have influence. Finding a few bigots in Twitter is easy for absolutely anything.

Ignorance, media, social conceptuality and lack of education; all prevalent factors in todays society that result in the OP.

 

Slightly OT:

I find it funny how if a Muslim kills someone, or does something wrong and it's on the news, their religion, Islam, will be mentioned.

However, if it was a Christian or a Jew killed someone, their religion wouldn't be mentioned, it would be xx killed xx blah blah and that's it, but a Muslim killing someone and then all Muslims become killers or terrorists.

That's how it is on Sky News in the UK anyway.

 

In my opinion I wouldn't say that social media encourages hatred towards others, I would say social media may influence people possibly creating hatred towards others. Anyway in terms of social networking sites like twitter I would say it doesn't encourage hatred towards others but it allows people to post their thoughts or opinions in an anonymous way whether it be positive or negative. In this case negative which shows hatred, however it isn't encouraged by social networking sites.

I also think that there should be harsher constraints on what can be said on the internet and I believe this could be managed more effectively by Twitter themselves.

 

Even if she was Muslim I don't understand what would be the big up roar about it? Should we lock away all white Americans because of the recent shootings? I mean hell they're American.. They could shoot us up at any time.

This is why I hate people.

 

People are dip shits. They are obvious to our history and our politicians cater to these morons instead of telling them to fuck off. We need role models and we aint got none.
