Hit up UVA with me brah, may be right up your alley depending on what kind of major you're going for.

I already applied there. It's actually pretty high on my list, but it's pretty difficult to get into :p Get my decision on Jan 31st.

Don't get me wrong, who you know can help out tremendously; from recommendations for school, to college, to jobs (hell, I only have my current job because I knew a guy.)

But knowing people doesn't help if you're incompetent/do a bad job/etc. If you get into a prestigious school partially due to a recommendation, you can still fail out (well, unless you're on a sport's team for a school that cares about their sports tbh.)

    Why is this Justin

I believe the most important thing is that you enjoy and have pride in the school you're going to. It's your life, might as well have things you're proud of in it.

Depends what you want to do with your life. Some pathways don't require university, and some do.

Unless you are attending a top 10 or top 20 school I really don't think the name of the school matters all that much. Just don't go to school for something you don't like and end up hating yourself for that the rest of your life. Go for something you love, get a degree, and get a good job!

Literally doesn't make a difference at all. Maybe some schools will prepare you for the MCAT better. If you plan on going to med school no one will give a shit where you went to undergrad (unless you're doing engineering.) Pick a school you think you can get a good GPA at and most importantly somewhere you could see yourself enjoying for 4 years.

IMO, its rlly important cuz achieving a degree better allows and kind of secures u a job in that field. But at the same time, many people stray away from their studied profession to work in other fields due to their different interests. However agn, the knowledge from that studied field is always of help to general life most of the time

Really depends on what you study and what you want to do when you graduate. As a software engineer it really does not matter all that much. Going to a top school might help you land a job right out of the gate but after that your skill and social skills become vastly more important.

I was on the medical school route until I switched into engineering after second year (realized it wasn't for me) and have done a ton of research on the subject. That being said I've been to a community college, a state school, and a selective research university (which I hated.) Take my opinion with a grain of salt because I'm a little bit cynical but if you're good enough to get into the top tier schools and can afford it go ahead. IT would probably be a great experience. I promise you though someone who got a 3.5 at Harvard is going to look worse than someone who got a 3.6 at a state school when it comes to applying for medical schools. Pick somewhere that you think you will enjoy your stay at and do some research into the program you're interested in. If you don't like your school, location, program, etc. you will burn out. Getting through your first two years of undergrad science and especially med school is HARD work. When it comes down to it though, most undergrad science (which I assume your major will be) programs are the same across all Universities and the only difference that will affect your future in medical school is perhaps if they know how to prepare you better for the MCAT.

It isn't. I looked at many top colleges in relation to BME and I didn't like the environment there at all. I'm going to a larger, basically free, but still competitive school here at Ohio State and I feel like the connections I'm making here are priceless compared to those I would be making at other schools. I'm not even majoring in what I originally intended to so don't chose your school solely on what you think you want to do in High School.

Thanks guys, awesome responses and really helpful and reassuring :)

Do y'all think someone who plans to study medicine can really make "connections" or is that more of a business major type of thing?

Yah, I meant to use it as an example of a highly rated school and didn't take anything else into account. That's something I forgot to mention OP, if you can get into a school that has a reputation for grade inflation/ is easier to get high grades I would factor that into your decision.

As far as connections go, I can't give good advice. Couldn't imagine they would help as much on the med school path as business/engi but they could. You're gonna want clinical experience so who knows.
