Latter Day Saints - Your views/thoughts/expierience with "Mormons"?

I was asked by someone to post a thread on Mormons. Not sure why, or what they wanted me to discuss, but here goes... I personally grew up in a LDS or "Mormon" family. I was sealed to my family as an infant, baptized at 8, became a 'Deacon' at 12 thus receiving the Aaronic Priesthood for the first time, then a 'Teacher' at 14, and lastly (for me) a 'Priest' at 16. Normally when someone turns 18 they become an 'Elder' and receive the Melchizedek Priesthood. That is if they are seen 'worthy' by the Bishop. My personal views on Mormonism differ than that of my families.I kinda have my own beliefs that are based around the Mormon religion, although most Mormons would say I'm a f*ck up and/or outcast me (and yes, they have done this and currently do this to me). I do believe in God, I believe Jesus was God's son, I believe we are all God's children, or at the very least, his creations. But I smoke weed, and cigis, drink on occasion, and I've done some things in my life most if not all Mormons would frown on. But I am still a Mormon in my eyes. And I feel that God wouldn't banish me to hell for smoking something he put on this earth....

I'm just wondering what everyone's views are on Mormonism, or what they think about it, or even their experience with Mormons for both good and for bad.

    Thanks,
    ---Robzombie179

Mormons at my school all seem to be very intelligent and they dominate the sports teams (like all of the basketball/volleyball team is Mormons and a good amount of the football team as well.

Mormon's basically believe they will become a god if they tithe, do good works, and get married in a mormon temple.

    Also they...
    • Think gay people aren't born that way and should not act on their desires.
    • Put gods judgment before their own and even their own families.
    • are asked to "multiply & replenish" the earth basically have lots of babies, which they brainwash.
    • pay 10% of cash to the church
    • They live off rumors of "spiritual experiences" aka made up bullsh*t.

One real good friend IRL is a mormon, he tells me all about it.

my thoughts on the entire cult can be summed up with one wordx5.

umm I think that the mormon religion isnt very appealing to me at all, being a christian and all, I dont feel one should have more the one wife at one time, and ALSO. they should utilize the modern technology we have and invest in some BIRTH CONTROL to limit the amount of children they have. :]

I was raised mormon as well. I was forced to believe. I now dont believe in the religion because of the forcing amount my parents did.

But technically it is okay to have more than one wife and I said they should use more of it for preventing so many children. Sorry for the slur I dunno, it is a battle of religions. I don't consider christianity a religion. More of a choice to follow Jesus. Note that it is a "choice".

The practice of polygamy in mormonism ended over 130 years ago. You might be getting confused with a splinter religion known as Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints (FLDS). When polygamy was revoked from the church members of the original sect disagreed with such prophecies and decided to continue practicing doing so in a new established group that continues to adhere to all the LDS rules with the exception of polygamy.

    Dude,

I'm in exactly the same boat as you, except smoking cigs part.

Grew up mormom, did the whole shabang. I recently turned 19 and everyone's expecting me to go on my mission (which isn't happening) and I recently got caught smoking bud so yeah, everyone realizes it's not happening anymore.

I believe in the whole religion, except I deviate from a lot of the bullshit rules. I think a lot of the rules are in place to prevent the masses from consequences.
Take the modesty rule for example. If a girl is immodest, the chances of her getting into sexual situations are higher, so therefore the church gives rules like "no skirt above the knees" and therefore is preventing more sexual encounters. (not that it applies to me of coarse)

Also, I think smoking weed is a whole religious mess. In the scriptures somewhere, it says that God gave all herbs to man for a reason. Things like tobacco are used for "sick cattle" and isn't for human use. But it say nothing about weed. Humans have 2 cannabinoid receptors in their brains that can only be activated by the consumption of cannabis (activation causing the euphoric "high"). If God didn't make weed for humans, then why did he give us these receptors in our brains? In my opinion, weed is supposed to be used for a spiritual use (similar to peyote for the native americans) and the only reason the church says nono is because it's legal status (obey the laws of the land)

Also, to the people reading this post, I am not an ideal mormon. Don't think that all mormon's are like me, they're not. The majority of them in my area are nice people who have never done anything wrong without regret. Me and OP just like to live life a little more than most of them.

According to the bible, man was created in gods image.

    • Many people, not just mormons, believe people aren't born gay.

He did create everything, after all. Why would they not?

They aren't asked to. It was a commandment given to Adam & Eve. Brainwash? Every single person who attends public school, watches tv, views media is being brainwashed.

It's in order to help the church grow. Nobody in the church profits from tithing (not monetarily, atleast)

Rumours? These are what people to believe their genuine feelings. Are you gonna call bullsh*t because I get angry/confused/happy etc?

Yes it's because of legal status, they don't want to be seen promoting unlawful behaviour, that wouldn't be a good image. Members have also been told to abstain because of its effects on the body/mind.

I agree 100% with this cult. It's pretty bad, I had to research this year for a paper, and during my presentation, I said at the end, THEY ARE A FREAKING CULT!

Cult: followers of an exclusive system of religious beliefs and practices

Every religion is a cult by definition. I'm assuming by cult, you mean that the Mormon religion brainwashes it's followers for gain?

Mormon's are far from being a cult by today's terms. They pay 10% of their income to the church. The church uses these funds to build temples, help the homeless, help refugees of natural disasters (LDS was second on-scene to the Haitian earthquake), missionary work, and plenty of other good-causes. No one is getting paid. No one get's privileges (besides spiritual) for being higher-up in the (for lack of a better term) hierarchy. The Prophet of the church doesn't get to live in a palace like the Pope, nor does he get paid a cent for his service. No one is gaining anything by proselytizing non-members.

Explain how the church is a cult.
