How does email protection work on AV

There's this feature on ESET Nod32 Anti Virus 5 called Email Protection. I want to know more information how this protection work. Does it work on firefox browser for when I do email checking?

 

My guess is that it stops you getting a virus via your emails, like files in the emails or you can even get a virus by just opening a email. I mean they wouldn't stick it on there for nothing right.

 

It most likely scans any attachment that come with emails and will check any links that are included in the message to ensure you don't get sent off to a virus link or a phishing one.
