Why is religion in the government.

The constitution states that the president can have any religious beliefs, yet Americans only want a christian president. When you're in court you swear to tell the truth on the 'holy bible' it's just another worthless book to people. I would honestly want to see the world today if religion was never 'thought of'

Why is religion in the government.

Well to the first thing you said, Christianity has at least 1 Billion followers so typical Americans (middle class) tend to vote for a christian minded president.

Religion is always there, people use religion to fill in the gaps of their life. Either be for not understanding or being less fortunate than others, Religion will always be there. Unfortunately.

Why is religion in the government.

So long the majority gets their morals from religion, the gov't will be influenced also.

To the court situation, it's just tradition.

Why is religion in the government.

Because the people who run the government want a Christian majority.

They are threatened by other religions such as Islam.

Why is religion in the government.

Wouldn't having a majority of atheists be non-threatning?

Why is religion in the government.

I don't know that the latter is necessarily true, but there is certainly no religious requirement to hold the office, in accordance with the No Religious Test Clause. (We've had our share of non-Christian Presidents, too.)

    It's not a requirement.

Why do the religious convictions of our elected officials matter?

Why is religion in the government.

Because I am sure if someone is running for president and he says he is atheist he will not win because of his religious views while he might be the most suited candidate. Religious views have no business in the political world (at least that's how it should be)

Why is religion in the government.

Because that is what our nation is founded on?

It has been this way always. Do you not know about the U.K. throne and how it used to be tossed back and forth between Catholics and Protestants?

Religions have their fair share of idiots, but so do atheists. Personally I would rather have someone who claims to follow a decreed code of morals, as opposed to someone who doesn't.

Why is religion in the government.

I agree with your second point; however, I'm not too sure about your first one. Do you have an example of an atheist whose Presidential run was impeded due to his disbelief?

    No it's not.

There's a reason we didn't emulate the British system in regard to having a state religion.

As would I, but this has nothing to do with religion.

Or everyone could stop the prejudicial subscription of the belief that religion effects your rationality and ability to lead a country. It shouldn't matter.

Why is religion in the government.

Installs good morals, and that's what people see in it.

Anyway I'm pretty sure you're right on the whole constitution thing. This country was founded upon freedom of religion (which may be why its mentioned and talked about so much)

Why is religion in the government.

Actually the Constitution never mentions God, Creator, or Christianity. It only mentions religion to separate church and state. Because people did something in the past, doesn't mean we should do it now. You must enjoy slavery as well. I sure know the Christian God does. Are you saying atheists are not moral? Did you know that the two highest contributing people to charitable causes (Warren Buffet/Bill Gates) are both atheists? Morality is subjective, not given by your moronic book.

Why is religion in the government.

It has been determined through scientific polls that almost half of all Americans would not vote for a candidate no matter what if they were an atheist.

Why is religion in the government.

If a president was elected from another religion, he/she would have to swear in with the holy text of their religion. Although I think a world leader should have religion, as the mainstream christian, muslim, hindu or any other religion all have the same message in the end. It promotes peace and love for one another, which is the right sort of influence we should be subject too. We should really worry if an extremist gets into a position of power though.

Why is religion in the government.

Why do they need to have religion? Are you saying I would not be able to effectively lead this country just because I don't believe in fairy tales?

Why is religion in the government.

Where in my text did I say they needed to have a religion?

Furthermore, just because YOU don't have faith in something, it doesn't give you the right to take the piss out of other peoples beliefs, and yes I am referring to the fairy tale comment.

Why is religion in the government.

    Why?

And all religions are based on myths, also known as fairy tales.

Why is religion in the government.

Nonsense. Everybody has the right to critique the ideas of their peers; this is a central tenet of free speech. Religion is, in no way, immune from criticism.
