Any electricians?

My experience in electricity is about 0.03% and I wish to DIY this.



Is what I want to achieve.

Basically, it's an air-pump for a fish tank. Plugged into a multi-way socket.

I want to install a toggle between the outlet and the accessory so I can kill it without unplugging it relentlessly.





What I want to do is get a lightswitch plate, install it on the side of the cabinet, run wire from plug to the switch, then run from the switch to the pump.

Now, like I said, my experience is very slim. Is this possible/reasonably practicable or not?

Why would you even be unplugging the pump to begin with?

 

The noise of the thing isn't great, so turn it off once the kids go to bed sort-of-thing.

It's literally just an air pump that feeds the Nemo fish you see the bottom.

The water filter oxygenates the water, so I could remove the pump entirely and it would be no problem for the fish.

Yeah I did consider doing this. However, it still presents the problem of leaning over the back of the sofa to switch it on or off.

I ended up using an inline-toggle switch ( like the ones you get on a lamp ) and it appears to be working just fine. The wires after cutting them only contained a live and neutral so I'm thinking I could likely wire it to a light switch and mount it flush with the side of the cabinet. However, this is for a later date.
