    [HELP] Learning part-time on my own.. Tips?

    Hi all,

    I am going to be free for 1 year and wondered what languages you recommend I learn? I am a beginner at programming but really need to cover as much ground as possible as I will be getting thrown into the deep end after my year is up.

    I was thinking of trying to get to grips with:
    - Java
    - C++

    What do you think?

    Take on one at a time until you have basic knowledge of one then move on from there.

    Java I suppose. That's what most people start out with. I've used a few java text books, particularly the one now I like a lot. It goes pretty far as well if you decide to go that route.
