How to Setup your VPS on Ubuntu

Possibly the hardest OS to navigate when using SSH, but the most common and the most useful to learn how to use IMO. My guide is fairly quick for Ubuntu standards and will get you running LXDE so you will be able to actually see your VPS.

    Things you will need:
TightVNC (I use it because it is a very lightweight client and runs quickly, you can use UVNC and others if you'd like too)
    Putty
A VPS that uses Ubuntu (my guide supports all versions)

    http://www.tightvnc.com/
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html (run the one that's most appropriate)
This guide isn't about choosing a VPS so find another guide if you're not sure about what VPS to choose. PhotonVPS is a reliable provider, they have a delay of around 12 hours per VPS.

So anyway onto the guide, follow it carefully, read everything and if something goes wrong make sure you have typed my prompts in correctly.

First thing we want to do is open up your email. Look at your VPS details and note down the "main" ip and root password.

Open putty and insert your ip into the top field. Use the default port (22) unless they have supplied you a different one.

Hit open and a command prompt will open. Following the next few things very carefully.

The first thing you will need to do is log in as "root" and nothing else.

Then enter your root password that was given too you in the email.

The next few things you will have to hit enter after every line, to copy the line "ctrl+c" and right click on putty.

First we'll make sure the server is updated by typing this:

Notice how we use "apt-get" instead of yum -y, something that we would use when installing on CentOS. If you're wondering about not using sudo, I don't use it and I've had no problems.

    Next we'll install the vnc
Even though I'm installing tightvncserver all the other VNC clients will work with it.

Now we want to install our preset environment, since we'll be using LXDE we want to use:

    Now we'll config our VNC.

    You'll now be prompted to supply a VNC password, the password has to be eight characters long. Now we have the VNC working but if you check it now it will only display a grey box and a cursor. So to fix this;

    Kill the server

    Navigate to your vnc directory.

(remember the space between cd and /root and the foward slash at the end)
A program called nano will pop up, use the arrow keys to navigate through the letters. Find somewhere where it says /etc/X11/xsession. Place a # infront of the /etc/X11.. then add these two lines at the end of the Nano doc.

Hit ctrl+o and to check if the VNC is working type

The following isn't that important to you except the port. The port is found by looking at the server ip address and then the number after the colon. This is usually 1 which stands for default or 5901.

Open up your VNC client and type in (Main IP)::port (usually 5901). Hit connect and it will prompt you for a password. Use the password they gave you in the email you recieved.

You should get a desktop with Ubuntu =D. Now you need to install the bot client. I refrained from installing java in putty as it is more complex.

The first thing once you have gotten it working is to open up the terminal, the location of this differs but isn't to hard to find.

    Open the terminal and type
Then open firefox, log onto rsbots.net and download the client.

Save the client into a desktop directory and use Ubuntu's inbuilt extractor. Extract the client as "botclient".

Now you'll need to make an exception for the installer. To do this use chmod like so

    Then open the installer

Note: You will need java for this, if it isn't working then you'll need to re install java.

Now do the same thing for the client.

You're now finished, make sure to close your VNC viewer when you are not using it.
