Discord Integration! =]

So... I was talking to @Sythe about the possibility of integrating Discord into the forum itself to help bring the community closer together. @n4n0 has been kind enough to have the Sythe Discord Server up and running and I think that having this feature available will get more people interacting with one another. For all of you newer members who may not know, we used to have an IRC (Unofficially) and a LOT of people used it. It was a great way to reach out to staff and also fun! In my opinion (this was in 2006-2009) when the IRC was around I felt that Sythe was more welcoming and friendly. It kept you there!

SO anyways, me and richard talked and I think we both agreed that while, yes, Sythe's Discord is in its early stages it has the potential to expand into a much bigger thing. I explained to Rich that this could possibly get people to stay longer, to be more ACTIVE in the community, and create more content which is key right now.

So i presented him with an upcoming XenForo plugin that does a few things:

A - It integrates into the website and its theme. It provides a quick, secure, and easy way to both chat with other members, and use voice as well.

B - More importantly, it LINKS your discord account to your SYTHE account. This is crucial. This way you know you are talking to said member. (unlike the IRC which was an issue that Im sure @Sythe despised the most)


Either way, he told me to go ahead and post this because I want to see what my fellow users think! I honestly would LOVE to get it back to where we can join a room together, talk and share pictures and laugh and all, and just have fun

UPDATE: I PM'd the devs of this plugin to request screenshots and also a beta testing of this plugin that I will be installing on my sandbox Xen Forum i have to see if its suitable. I will update you all once i have received a response.

I'm wondering, how would the integration work? Would it just be a big button that just opens Discord? Or is there a way to actually have a widget on the site that keeps working, even if you switch pages, etc? Because one is actual integration, the other isn't. Since the module you linked is unavailable... But if we do use that module, it would just automatically verify users on Discord. Ehh

I'd rather have TokBox or another chat platform directly integrated - I would be willing to sponsor the costs

 

Someone replied to the plugin page asking for screenies, so I will keep you updated.

 

We can only have this if it fixes the issue that let's me pretend I'm Sythe even though I am verified in the Discord, although it does make for some great lulz.

Depends how secure the link is. If it does actually link 1:1 Sythe to discord, and we can keep 2fa verified and enforced (eg. you can't hack a discord account without 2fa that's attached to a 2fa'd sythe account) we could use it as a verified trading medium.

Middlemanning and technical support would be much easier... I'd like more info but I'm leaning towards implementation.

 

Yeah blade it links your discord account WITH your Sythe User Account. So you know that said DIscord user is in fact the User on the forum.

 

Right, but you can't know that the Discord account isn't compromised. You can 2fa sythe, but can you 2fa the LINK to discord? If discord isn't 2fa'd then the entire thing is useless.

And @n4n0 can change certain channels or the entire server to REQUIRE 2fa and sythe verification.

BUmp. I have had a lot of people who like this concept @Sythe

 

If it can be done in a secure manner as stated above and there are no major downsides I see no reason not to. Not saying it needs to be done right away however as obviously i'm sure there's a lot of shit on the To Do List as well as bugs to fix in the bug tracker so this doesn't need to be made top priority. Would be nice though although i'm not sure how much I would personally use it.
