Guide to check if you have a dynamic ip

Well i had a dynamic ip for several years and i didn't know until a few weeks ago when i was trying make a heap of account on runescape. Well its very simple to find out and take a matter of minutes to work out. This is useful because you can bypass the limit of creating 10 account per ip on runescape, if your getting Ddosed you can quickly change your ip and so on.

How to check if you have a dynamic ip.

    Step one. Open command prompt.

Step two. In command prompt type 'ipconfig /all'

Step three. Scroll down, you will see a long list of configuration settings. Look at 'Dchp enabled' if there is a Yes beside it, you are dynamic. If it has a No beside it, you are static.

    How to change your ip

Step 1.Go to Google.com and type in "whats my ip".

Step 3. Go to any of the those websites.

Step 4.Copy that ip and put it on a word document.

Step 5. Turn off your modem (usually at the back on the box in a button form)

Step 6. Refresh the page that showed you the ip address.

Step 7. Copy the ip address and put it on the same word document.

Step 8. If its the same ip address then you got a dynamic ip, if not you don't :(

And that's it, how simple is that i didnt even need to use a picture. Now happy times. :)

Guide to check if you have a dynamic ip

Decent guide, but if you want to make it easier for users here's the way to do it (you may add this to your guide)

    Step one:
    Open command prompt.

    Step two:
In command prompt type 'ipconfig /all'

    Step three:
Scroll down, you will see a long list of configuration settings. Look at 'Dchp enabled' if there is a Yes beside it, you are dynamic. If it has a No beside it, you are static.

Static IP's are avalible through ADSL connections.

Guide to check if you have a dynamic ip

DHCP for a home user that has router will always be enabled... as the router assigns a IP to user, unless of course the router reserved the static IP for the MAC address or user self auto-assigned from computer's settings.

But, DHCP does not validate whether or nor the external IP is static.

    Restarting your modem works better

Guide to check if you have a dynamic ip

Though that is not what he is trying to teach you. He's simply teaching you how to tell if your home IP is dynamic, not the ISP. You do have a point, but still trying to make things simple for people apposed from confusing the hell out of them. Though DHCP does not validate if the external IP is static, it depends on your service. If your ISP does not support static IP's, you obviously have a dynamic. So this method will show you if you have a dynamic or static the basic way without messing with external IP's.

I think nobody cares if the local IP address is static or not. What you care about is the external one.

Also, all ISP support static IP's and it's their decision(or if you pay) if you get one.

    Delete that part.

Good point, it is true that you have to pay more for a static. I'll leave this be, I have a guide to write. Learning new things every day, yes? Glad I met somebody on my networking skills level. Very nice to know there's experienced people out there.

Eh, sorry, I'm kind of confusing.

It works to check if I have a dynamic IP, but the method of changing the IP to see does not work for me.
