Oxygen - Will It Run Out?

Hey i've just been thinking, will our supply of oxygen ever run out? With an increase of population and polution as well as a decrease in trees, eventually we will have a higher intake of oxygen than our world can produce?

Or does our world have so much oxygen that we consume such a small amount that it will never run out for millions of years?

Just a thought, maybe someone here knows whether its possible or not to run out of oxygen.

very interesting, i've thought about this before. by the time we face this problem technology will proberly have the capablilites to change atoms and molecules into oxygen,

if im completely wrong dont blame me cos im only 14 lol

Of course it will run out the way this is all going.
All our plant sources are being desposed of.
    Eventually we will run out,
    I doubt in our lifetime,
and Im pretty sure thats not whats going to kill us off.

Oxygen - Will It Run Out?

It really depends on the situation we will be in within the upcomming years...

One of the biggest produces of oxygen are plants, but trees are just one of the plants that produce oxygen. Plants, both in the oceans and on the land, take in carbon dioxide, and during the photosynteses process, "breath out" oxygen.

^ Did a bit of research and came up with this...

As long as our plants in the ocean and land live, we should be fine...

Its Impossible. Unless we destroy all the plants in Earth we'll Live.

Well a lot of pollution is going into the ocean and we are constantly cutting down trees for resources and for more space.

Maybe our plants will adapt to our pollution though? (would be kind've funny if they did)

Even though there are about 7 billion of us, we don't use up enough oxygen to really impact the overall oxygen level. There are MANY more oxygen producing plants by several factors of 10.

...I could be wrong though...you never know.

On the scale of the planet, we use very very little oxygen. Also, there is a very large amount of vegetation releasing additional oxygen into the atmosphere, from algae to grass to trees.

I was wondering what our consumption of oxygen was.

I didn't realise grass could produce oxygen either lol.

I suppose that kind've ends this thread :p.

Only about 10% of the oxygen comes from plants and trees. Almost all of it if from either phytoplankton or zooplankton near the surface of the ocean, I don't remember which kind it was, though.

Unless all the trees on the planet disappear, the oxygen should be fine. And the planet is very big. And as Shredderbeam said, "On the scale of the planet, we use very very little oxygen."

Oxygen - Will It Run Out?

I lol when i read this.

Sorry don't mean to criticize but LOL! The trees create a very little amount of our oxygen compared to the algae in the ocean. If we cut down every tree in the world we would still be perfectly fine, and as shedder stated we use minimal oxygen compared to how much is produced. The algae creates over 70% of the oxygen we breath.

We will not run out unless something goes horribly terribly wrong.

probably not. there's logs of things in the ocean. technology will evolve also. they'll probably be able to make oxygen

Oxygen - Will It Run Out?

We actually don't consume much oxygen; we're just killing the organisms that generate it. Even so, it is doubtful, unless the oceans are destroyed. Funny how the sea can live without land yet land cannot live without the sea...

carbon dioxide accounts for less than 1% of the atmosphere if i'm not mistaken.

Yeah, but then you have the global warming enthusiasts telling us that the greenhouse effect will raise the temperature of the oceans, thus killing these organisms, too.

Oxygen - Will It Run Out?

The idea of us running out of oxygen is for the most part ludicrous. Oxygen is the second most plentiful gas on earth, not to mention that it is renewable through trees and plants (any vegetation). Compared to the size of the earth we use a relatively small amount of oxygen as well.

Oxygen - Will It Run Out?

I believe Oxygen is the least of our problems. >.>

Yet, this gas should not ever run out, for the Plants that exist are able to create more Oxygen than we can get out. As we produce CO2, the Plants convert it back to Oxygen in a small matter of time. It's not an issue to such an extreme that we are creating more Oxygen than Plants can deal with. CO2 is needed for Plants to survive, and Oxygen is needed for us to survive. We all provide ourselves an equal balance, and is why our Oxygen supply should never run out.

I would say.. life on earth would probably end before oxygen becomes a problem. there IS that much of it.
