    Military MOS

    Well I've known I wanted to go into the military for a while know but have just kept putting it off as I find it hard to get off time for work to take asvab etc. Well with summer approaching I know realise its time to kick it in gear but I have a quick question for you all as its something I've been debating for a while.

    I've taken practice asvabs and have scored really well other then the mechanic section and I can basically choose any MOS in addition I'm in great shape cardio wise and strength so I feel I can do basically anything.

    So my question to you all is this Should I choose a job that is badass in a way and probably more fun "Para rescue army ranger etc" or one that I can get good experience doing and even maybe make a few bucks doing it" computer related cryptology etc.." while in college. Now I know that its my decision and in the end I should choose whats best for me but I just wanted to see others opinions.

    I'd stick to doing something in college, you'll always have something to fall back on, and better chances at getting different kinds of jobs with good experience.

    Don't limit yourself, there aren't any requirements for the military besides age;

    If your mind is set on joining the army, really make sure you're ready for it. It will effect your family emotionally, and even yourself if you get sent out to the Middle East/Korea.

    Plus, if you plan on starting a family of your own, than you want to have something saved up while you're not there.

    I don't think the army will be "fun", your life will be on the line, you'll be in tough situations, not to mention the food is horrible.

    No doubt I've thought about it alot There are definitely things about the military that are turn offs like not being able to see your family and I understand the military might not always be fun but then again the military will not only pay for my college but will also make me a better person.

    I always say do what you find fun, I took the money route in college and I hated it (nothing to do with military by the way), but after I had finished the 2 year course which I despised going to everyday, I did learn a lot and it gave me te option to make a lot of money, but I took a course that I'd find enjoyable after it and I have to say, although it's about £20k less a year I would rather do the fun job, as it makes life more enjoyable.

    Although your thread is not about joining the elite/military, I'd caution that you understand this decision is much more a way of life than “a job” and certainly not something I'd consider "fun". High Risk and Adventure is what typically drives young warriors such as you into this walk of life. The best in our field do in fact start out in a Ranger Bn. However in my experience, a very large majority find out quickly this is not for them. For me and my decision of long ago, it honestly has always been in my heart and soul. As for the long term pay-offs, very few in this elite profession develop the skill-sets and luck to actually make a nice paycheck. I know many that have lost in this game and many more that have broken-down after the years of hardship both mentally and physically. It is what it is and although money was never the focus, I've given up much and lucked out on being rewarded in doing what I do today.. best of luck in your choice.

    Is the computer related cryptology job part of a military program? If so I would encourage you to do that over Para Rescue or Rangers. Do not get me wrong, they are both great jobs and it is great thing to serve your for your country in the front lines, however unless you are planning to be a private contractor as your job when you get out, it seems like it would be more restricting to find a job. If you were to work in a technological branch of the military or the non front line jobs, when you finish you have a lot of job experience. It would be something other companies would find desirable and chances are you would of learned a lot.

    However, judging by your post it seems to me like you would want to do the front line type of thing more. To me it seems like you want to have a cool "bad-ass" job and you consider that to be Rangers or Para Rescue and made the other option out to seem a little bland (at least that is how I interpreted it). Although it is very dangerous, I'm an sure you are already aware of that risk and anyone considering joining those areas is willing to take that risk. So honestly pick the choice that you seem like you would feel content doing and something you won't regret down the future.

    Good luck.

    It all depends on one thing- the reason why you are going into the Military. Is it for College money, something to do, Serving your Country, or what?
    You have to figure out why you want to do it in the first place..peace

    First off Spyike I'd like to say thanks for your response and I love to see you still active on sythe. Now I realize going into the military isn't going to be easy and that positions such as an army ranger have extremely hard training but I like to pride myself in saying I can do anything I put my mind to and so far it's worked and I've encountered many physical and mental challenges in my life and I belief this one will be one of the toughest but nevertheless Im diving into it head first...
