trading in gaming desktop for laptop

the past month i've been using a laptop, mostly for netflix its a pos.

but i like the mobility of it, and it would work great for me being out of state at times for work.

so the question is how realiable is a gaming laptop? i know my desktop is great, and will be good for atleast 5 years i'd imagine. Are laptops the same way? and how do they handle?

also where is a good place to custom build a laptop? i know there is the infamous alienware, and i built one for me and it came out to $1300, which seems reasonable.

whats the difference between a gaming desktop and a gaming laptop performance wise.

and what laptop specs would i want to match the performance of my current rig, see the link in my signiture for my pc specs.

xoticpc has a great selection of gaming laptops with many different options
a good gaming laptop will be able to play pretty much any game with max setting
with a desktop, theyre not limited to a small space, so naturally the hardware can be pushed much further. Thus, desktops are definitely more powerful, performance/dollar-wise theyre a better deal, too.

IMO, the most powerful gaming laptops on the market right now are Sager laptops. Theyre capable of utilizing SLI with graphics cards, allowing dual cards...and theyre also highly upgradable post-purchase. Second-best would have to go to MSI, hands-down.
in the long run, theyre generally good for about 3 or 4 years before they start to get outdated, so they don't hold out as long as desktops do

Lets just say if you purchase a gaming laptop, you will pretty much be treating it like a desktop. Here's why:

Gaming laptops are power hungry, average battery life is maybe 1 and a half hours of gaming off of the charger, so you will pretty much have it plugged in 24/7.

Gaming laptops are also a portable heater. Since laptops have much less airflow than a desktop, they run much more hot, you will MOST LIKELY need to purchase an additional external cooler to keep temperatures down while playing.

Simple and plain, laptops will NEVER have as much processing/gaming power than a desktop, it is physically impossible. For the price you have to pay for a gaming laptop, you might as well invest into a desktop.

And to even come close to the performance of your current desktop, you will probably need to find a laptop with SLI GTX 670ms which will probably run in the 2-3 grand range.

Now with that all aside, ASUS makes great gaming laptops, I don't have any specific models in mind, but i'm sure you can easily find them on their website.

I'd definitely go with the first one. People don't recommend them all the time for no reason. They're beastly.

Not to mention, BF3 can use over 1.5gb of vram on max setings, so having the extra 500mb is a plus.

the sager that you mentioned is MUCH more potent than the other two. Alienwares are a waste. Their hardware has fallen behind the likes of MSI and ESPECIALLY Sager. A little tidbit of information, for those who are curious... Alienwares used to be built off the EXACT chassis that Sagers were built on. They borrowed from Sager, and thus their notebooks were exactly the same...
Since sager has split off and taken partnership with Dell a few years back, alienware has fallen off the maps in comparison.
People assume that since the alienware name is affiliated to it, it must be good. However this is far from the truth. Theyre good, but not as good as others anymore, especially in their value.
The GT650M will be able to get you decent framerate in BF3, but not at max settings. That GTX670, on the other hand, is much more potent, and it'll get you to your goal ;) don't let the amount of memory fool you, the amount of memory should NOT be your deciding factor in a mobile GPU. it's the more technical details that make the GPU potent...which I don't feel like explaining, since i've gotten technical in MANY other posts in this sub-forum.
ex: the GT650m 2gb card is about 20 percent less potent than the GTX660m 2gb card, but yet the 1.5gb GTX670m is marginally more powerful than the the 2gb GTX660m.
