the R9-280x is the obvious choice. the poster above who recommended the 760 has no idea what he's talking about. I'm generally an NVidia guy and will spend the extra to get what I want, but given your choices and budget....its obvious. the r9-280x competes more closely with the GTX 770, and between those two....it's close. It's way above the 760.
But then, if you move up to the price range of the GTX 770(~400)...you're also in the range of the R9-290. Once again, this card blows away its NVidia competition.

Also, between your two choices, the extra 1GB of video memory will come handy on the AMD card, with many games coming close to/running over the 2GB threshold nowadays at just 1080P. It's a shame NVidia is even releasing 2GB cards anymore on their mid-high tier cards. You have to pay extra to get a 4gb card on the 760/770s.

You can't use 4GB. It has basically no value at all.

I'd go with the 760 since they are fairly comparable and EVGA is a better brand.

was leaning towards the r because it was 384 bit and nivds drivers have been shit the past 6 months. but /shrug still undecided, with over 3grand spent this month i may just wait for the 800series to come out and pick up a 770

Lol? You miss the point. You CAN easily use 2gb of vram up with today's games, even at 1080p. Once you hit your limit...welcome to massive performance fails. At that point, your only option is to step up to the 4gb versions, so that you can play properly. I only game at 1080, and am regularly hitting over 2gb vram in current Gen titles. No, I dont come close to 4gb usage(not far from 3gb usage), but at least I'm not holding myself back due to memory limitations. Think before you speak out like a dumbass.

And yes, as you said it has a wider memory bus, which is beneficial under high resolution loads because it can move drastically larger amounts of information. Plus you'll have the 3gb vram and a drastically better card in general than the 760.

If you feel like holding out, the next generation Maxwell-based NVIDIA cards will be worth the wait, much more so than the options you are considering now.

Try titanfall at near maxed settings on a 4gb card. Then correct yourselves. At 1080p, you'll find well over 3gb VRAM usage. You can run this game on a 2gb card, it will just cache textures in your system RAM, significantly impacting performance. Shall I continue? How about that I hit 3.5gb VRAM usage on AC black flag?

Most of the games I play are almost at 3gb usage. The current and next Gen games will utilize the full extent of your card, if it has the power to utilize high enough settings to do so (which the 280x and 770 can easily do.)

Modded skyrim can also easily use 4gb of VRAM also, fwiw.

Are you 13? You sound 13. Grow the fuck up.

    http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-280X-vs-GeForce-GTX-760

The two cards are basically the same. The 760 is slightly worse but you are getting a good brand for $30 less.

2GB vs 4GB does not effect most people. Highly modded setups or certain games. See http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/24q373/build_help_whats_the_difference_between_2gb_n_4gb/ for information and benchmarks. Please inform yourself because being a complete tool in the future. Thank you.

I give up. You two have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. The 280x(rebranded and clocked 7970) competes with the 770(rebranded and clocked 680) in no world was it ever meant to compete with the 760. Its far beyond that. Gpuboss is useless, try real world benchmarks. buold a real computer and witness it for yourself.

I don't pretend to know what I'm talking about. I've probably had my hands in more computers than you've ever seen.

To the OP, sorry for the way the thread has gone. I've just tried to present you with the facts to help your purchase decision. Do as you please, I obviously don't know what a computer is.

Weird, it seems like guy who actually owns a 4gig graphics card would know more about it. I wouldn't be suprised if you could easily get over 2 gig GPU usage playing the newer games like titanfall on maxed out settings.

Then give us a source, you dumb shit. I've also seen thousands of computers. You have not built that many. Stop being a dipshit.

The 4GB card will use more than 2GB but it will not increase performance all that much.

Personally, if I were looking to upgrade my GPU and had someone tell me that a 4GB card was well worth it, I would trust him over someone who was just making assumptions. But hey, that's just me.

so, you'd buy a car because a tells you its better without you personally taking it for a test drive, or comparing it to other cards?

Personally would like to see benchmarks if anyone has any of either of the two cards.

    Get a 780 TI.

    Srs.

    I'd recommend a sapphire r9 270x for around 200ish.

If you want to go up to $300

    SAPPHIRE 100363L Radeon R9 280X

That's just my take on it.
