How can I hide my torrents?

So I use uTorrent and Vuze a lot for legitimate downloading and today I got an e-mail from my isp that says I have exceeded my bandwidth for the month. This is the second time it has happened in a 6 month period. I also know several people that have gotten an e-mail for downloading a copyrighted movie and game. I feel that it is an invasion of privacy to see what you're doing on the internet, whether illegal or not.

Is there any way that I can hide how much and what I download from my isp? Mainly with torrent files but anything else too.

I also want to browse anonymously.

 

Bandwidth notification doesn't mean they check what your surf or download.

I know what it means. I basically want as much anonymity as possible. I assume proxies that are located in random, less developed countries that aren't native English speakers will be best since the likelihood that the government and people running the proxy will cooperate is low.

I know it works for Firefox, you could try and search if other applications do.

 

I don't understand the SSH part. I don't have a computer or something I can use as a proxy. or a server anywhere.

If I just use a socks5 proxy in firefox is that the same thing?

The socks host I entered works as a proxy and everything, but what else can I do?

I'm trying to read as much as I can and learn how to work with this stuff. I want to be as anonymous as possible.

 

That probably wouldn't solve his problem 1 bit since his isp will still handle the traffic. Really the only thing they cannot see is encrypted traffic.

The only (legal) solution I can think of would be to buy better service.

They can view/log anything you do, it's not unlawful.. the only way to defeat what your isp sees would be to use secured/encrypted traffic even for downloading.

You could try torrenting files that are encrypted (hell even a decent *.rar will work). That'll blind them from what exactly it is you're downloading however it won't stop them from knowing you've reached your download limit.

 

Well, I want to know how to browse and download anonymously. I won't be looking at anything illegal, but I want to be as close to untraceable as possible. I guess my limit isn't really what I care about most.

As far as the torrents, I know Vuze has an option to encrypt the data and monitor peers and trackers. I have also read good thing about PeerBlock. I'm not sure of their effectiveness though. I am more concerned with browsing than torrents though.

 

You need a VPS for that. Secure shell will encrypt all the data sent.

Once you are done use 127.0.0.1 as IP and the port your set on putty as the port.

You could SSH a server from a SSH session XD

Ping would be increased a lot, but it would work.

 

You could do as tux suggested and run ssh tunneling, there's also tor, and various ways you can encrypt your traffic. But there are obvious downsides to using somebody elses system to route your connections.

If you can handle a shell you could get a good ssh host from anapnea (they're fuckin kick ass, even their free service tops all the paid services I've found). Anapnea will give you a crapload of services you can use for anonymity.

 

I've tried tor, but I would rather not completely rely on it.

Can someone explain a little bit more about SSH tunneling? The term is somewhat new to me and I am confused as to what you mean by getting a host and handling a shell and all that.

An encrypted connection can be completely cheap/free but requires more work,.. Although tor is an easy alternative, though if you have a good ssh provider like anapnea you can run services and anapnea alone will cloak your IP. You can just use it to forward the traffic to yourself rather than download it to anapnea and scp it to your home machine.

To be honest I have absolutely no clue if you can run scp (or equivelant services) off of windows. *but* you can use programs like connect bot to ssh. Another downside is anapnea ssh runs freebsd and you'd need a little knowledge of that.

It boils down to 1 thing. for windows you'd have to pay for the service, for unix/linux you'd get it for free.

You really need to pick your battles here.
