Future of MMOs

What do you think about MMOs in the future? Do you think they'll always be a staple in the gaming industry? It's really neat to think about video games becoming indistinguishable from reality like Elon Musk stated in the past.

 

Slowly dying out, we see the fps genre really capitalizing better for some reason recently, e.g fortnite, apex, cod mw, definitely taking a lot of the mmorpg players. When it does come to mmorpg, most are dated games that we play for nostalgia tbh.

I disagree. There are plenty of new MMOs that have quite large fan bases.
There's also always going to be new innovative ones.
Sure, games like Fortnite, Apex, Cod, etc. have had more success recently, but that doesn't mean MMOs are dying or going to die.
MMOs and FPS games are completely different and provide different feelings to the gamer.
FPS games are more intense, more engaging, more thrilling. MMO games are more chill and relaxing, entertaining.
There's room for both in the market, and neither will die anytime soon.

 

They will always exist. And with the development of virtual reality? Probably will be bigger in the future. Escapism is a really really big industry.

But yea, like other's have mentioned, MMOs are just being eaten by FPSs. I only see this as a short-mid term thing tho.

 

My problem with MMOs is its kind of like the two party system in American politics, nobody else is really willing to take the risks and make a new game that is ground-breaking. We get a lot of recycled MMOs and poor quality smartphone games. Whoever comes out with the first MMO, where it is virtual reality and you can fight dragons will be epic lol.

 

As first person mentions, it's quickly dying out.. Not slowly, but its overrated and that is for sure!
