    Which is better to learn?

For a new programmer which is better to learn?

    C++ or Java

I already know the basics of C++

Which is easier to learn and which will you be able to do more with/ feel more accomplished?

    Which is better to learn?

    From my shallow knowledge:
Java is easier to make GUIs, and generally just an easier programming language. It is also cross-platform.
However, C++, while potentially more difficult, is more versatile.

My past 2 semesters at college we learned Java, but this semester we moved to C++. Having experience in both now; C++ is a much faster, efficient language to use, it is much faster than Java, but Java is much easier to learn syntactically. If you want fast results(as in making more complex programs faster), i'd say Java, but every operating system/mainline program is most likely made in C++. We had to do a comparison in class but I won't go into all the details.

Go with C++, more functionality to it, faster, and by learning C++ you can start your way to learning Java, since Java is easier to learn since it is Object-Oriented.

I'd say that Java being OO makes it harder unless you've done OOP before.

I'd recommend learning Java before you do any C++. It's much more useful in many cases, due to it's huge standard library. You can make GUIs, do 2D or 3D graphics, make bots, all using the standard java libraries.

C++ on the other hand is pretty barebone, and doesn't come with any libraries that enable the afforementioned functionality. Unless you really need a lower-level language for whatever reason (which you won't unless you want to make an ulltra-high performance app) I'd recommend not worrying about C++ as it's not really all that useful as a begginner and it's being used less and less and ditched in favour of managed languages like C#.

    But see.

I was talking with a friend, and he put it quite well for me. And I am happy I decided to talk about programming and his job before he left the house that we were all at for a party.

Your usually a .NET person, OR, a Java person. Not both. Different loops, different everything. Entirely. .NET, being Visual basic, any of the C's, etc...

    Java. Being JAVA!

And something I have picked up in my own experiences. Put everything into a LOGIC concept. What I have ALWAYS done. Don't just read a book or view a tutorial and say, "OH! Bitch, I read/saw this! I know what I am doing!"... That's ignorance. What happens when someone gives you a task and all you can remember is how to some SIMPLE stuff off of a tutorial.

IF your starting programming. Visual Basic OR Java. Take 1 path. Not 2.

    Which is better to learn?

Where'd .NET & VB come into this? I thought we were talking about C++? Or are they the same...?

The choice of C++ or Java really depends on the end goal of learning the language, such as a specific project in mind. If you want to make a game or a certain application, or job opportunities, or whatever, you should specify where you want to go with learning a programming language, and then it will obvious which of the various advantages of either language are most useful to you.
