You can do this on any browser. Pressing the red x stops all the current processes. Such as loading the ad banner. To do this on iE you just wait for a new ad to load and press the red x. I also use this when I accidently click on something.
They also cannot detect it. It is on your browser not on their server side. Their ad manager is hosting these ads, for example. Google advertising. Google wouldn't mind and they woudn't know as they have over a billion adverts and how would they know if YOU pressed your red x.

I just put Firefox at the beginning to make it simpler, since all IE versions don't have a stop button.
