I have a guide about this to , where it is explained in more detail. its a easy way to make mils, but it is rather time consuming. The more money you have to buy ores with in the first place the bigger profit that comes out of it

its a well known method, and alot better then most of you guys admit.
makes about 10k/5min, so, not the worst method out there, if you count in the smithing exp you also gain.

Let's look at it:

Iron ore costs 97 gold and can usually be gotten for 94.

Coal ores cost 194 each, but usually sell for 200.

The total for the ore is about 494 gold.

Steel bars sell for 658 on the Grand Exchange.

That's a profit of 164 gold per bar.

Now we'll take a look at the time needed to actually do Steel Bars.

It takes about 70 seconds (walking) to load up ore at the bank in Al Kharid (the closest bank to a furnace in F2P; Port Phasmatys or Neitiznot are better for members), head for the furnace, smelt bars, and get back to the bank.

That means that you can do about 50 runs per hour. You only get 9 Steel Bars per run (because you need 18 coal and 9 iron to make them). So you can make 450 Steel Bars per hour. That means that you can make about (450 x 164) 73,800 gold per hour. Of course you need to spend time buying the ores and selling the bars in the Grand Exchange, but you can also save some time by occasionally running to and from the furnace.

While that isn't really big dough for a member, it isn't too bad for F2P without much gold, and because of that, the guide isn't that bad.
