Are you afraid of DEATH?

So I'm one of those guys who likes to think deeply about weird things that others probably don't think about as they just deem it ''natural'' and shrug it off. But it never has made sense to me, how a heart can allow us to live for lifespans of 80-100 years. It is simply another muscle, for the exception that it never, ever gets rest. And the day it does rest is the day you die. I guess what I'm trying to say is, doesn't it frighten you, knowing that our whole life revolves around this one muscle that can turn off at any given moment? It can turn off right now as you're reading this very sentence. And the scary part is that death is probably extremely painful. Think of the most agonizing pain you've ever felt in your life, then multiply that by like 10 and that's probably what death feels like. Anyway, to answer my own question, yes I am afraid of death, even if it is natural. What about you, sythe?

 

I'm not afraid of death. I don't think there is a particular reason for that.

 

Why be afraid of the inevitable?

 

Well, it's not mainly the fact they we will die that is frightening, it's more the agony and pain we'll go through while it happens. For me, anyway, that is the scariest part.

I feel like you should only be afraid of death if you didn't lead the life you truely wanted.
I had some problems and I'm fine now but it really made me realize that life is short. You gotta have fun. Why measure life in years instead of the quality of those years? I'm 16 and I could have died. Now I like to ask myself and others the question "if you were to die tomorrow would you be happy with the life you led? If not, why?" You cant take this shit for granted. All of that was just my thoughts when I read this. But I guess my answer to your question would be yes and no. I'm not afraid of death. I could die as I'm typing this and be completely with how I led my life. The thing that scares the shit out of mw is that if I were to die what would my family or friends do? Would some people even care?

Yes, I'm afraid of death. Maybe it'll be different when it's about to happen. No sense in belly aching when it's immediately inevitable, but I'd rather not die any time soon, and if I have a chance at survival, you KNOW I'll be running full speed ahead in the opposite direction.

I wish there were an afterlife, but there's no proof there is, I'm atheist, and so I'd rather stick around for as long as possible because I'm afraid of ceasing to exist.

I'm surprised how many people here are saying that they're not afraid of death. I think naturally we are afraid of what is unknown, when we were kids we were afraid of the dark, afraid of the deep water, afraid of losing our parents. It isn't any different now.

I'm scared because I don't know what comes after death. I'm scared that the only thing that I know will be gone. I'm not afraid of death itself, I'm afraid of the unknown.

 

I've learned to accept the inevitable from past experiences. Death will come for everyone, only thing you can do is prepare yourself for such things.

 

On the contrary, I'm waiting for it. Anything I do henceforth is just me choosing how to use remaining time; I'll do anything mentally stimulating to avoid being bored. I guess I'm a nihilist in many ways.

I have a heart condition so I will probably die earlier than others, I am not healthy, I am not physically fit, and I don't really care about any of the above.

 

Of pain sure, of death itself not really. Not scared for myself at least, scared for the people that are close to me.

 

There's no way to know what death actually feels like, unless you count those who die and are resuscitated, and they don't claim it to be incredibly more painful than the equivolent amount of non-lethal trauma

 

I was mainly referring to the cause of natural death, which is generally a heart attack. Everybody that has had a heart attack has reported excruciating pain, like an elephant stomping their chest. That sounds like a horrible way to die. Since we all, ultimately, die due to heart failure (The body cannot live without it working) We probably will all have to go through that pain.

On a side note, here's food for thought and a question; if you were resuscitated from a heart attack that felt like the worst pain ever, and then realize you nearly were put out of the misery that that pain caused, would you be happy or sad that you were revived, only to know that you'd have to re-experience that pain again?
